Seattle must have the most unintrusive population on earth. In almost a year of daily wear, while I'm sure there have been occasions where it's been observed, no one has yet made mention of my watch, let alone asked about the cost - both of which are just fine with me.

I'm actually happy that I don't have any friends or family that ask questions like this!

I did have the guy at Subway as me about my Sub-C in Yakima of all places. I told him how much it cost and he said he was going to go cry in the bathroom.

No one else has noticed but I don't see that many in the wild up here, mainly at the airport.

Go Hawks +2!

I noticed a guy wearing a coke GMT a few years ago at a gas station in Auburn, had a great conversation with him.. other than that, ditto on the airport! The PNW is definitely not "WIS country"

Dmitry Peskov (Vladimir Putin's spokesperson) was recently seen wearing a $620k Richard Mille. That watch costs over 4 years of his salary so naturally people assumed he is involved in "Other" activities. He reply was simply that it is a gift from his wife or significant other. I think that should work for most people if someone asks you that even if you aren't married.

When faced with that I've answered
" I don't recall exactly but if you google it I'm sure you will find the answer"

My answer to the first question is always the same : "Obviously!".

Regarding the second question the answer depends on the friend asking: if he (like most of my friends) does not have any interest on watches and knows only the name of "Rolex" I answer : "A lot !".

If, on the contrary, he's intersted in watches I answer : "Not so much, it was a real bargain!".

Me too. One of my coworkers once asked me how much my car cost (Porsche 911) and I deflected the answer. She just went online and looked it up. I could hear her gasp.

I like that. I'll usually mumble something about buying it used and try to change the subject.

I have only been asked once, at work. I looked down at my watch for a good 5 seconds, picked my head up, sighed and rounded down to the nearest even number. I made it as awkward as possible.

I was just recently asked that by a friend of a very close friend, and simply said, "I don't want to answer that." It was dropped and never came up again. I don't believe it's so much WHAT you say, but HOW you say it.

That question has occasionally been asked to me & so I tell them the truth, or at least the partial truth, "It was a gift from my wife for losing 60 pounds, so I've never asked her how much it cost because that's kinda rude." Of course I know how much it cost but that answer usually diverts the conversation elsewhere.

As Jerry says to George discussing a leather jacket on Seinfeld, "I paid what it costs"
That would be my answer to strangers, but I have never been asked.

I just tell the truth - I don't talk about money - and that depersonalizes it so it's not so awkward
