1) the original 36mm explorers were marketed toward men. Google older advertisements and you will see

2) any fans of the 6263 daytona here? Well anyone complaining about the bracelet and its taper on the current 36mm explorer should also complain about the 6263’s, as the dimensions are essentially the exact same (taper and clasp included)

3) it’s all a matter of perspective. I’ve owned both the 36mm explorer and 39, and had no preference. They’re both great watches. I’d wager not a single one of you “36mm is for women” would dare say that to someone’s face while wearing one. Only exists in internet land

This picture alone probably sealed the deal for me. I have a 7-7.25" wrist and dress pretty similarly to this picture so it was a good reference for me. I currently have the 36 and while it looks okay in pictures, the biggest issue was how it looks when actually looking at the watch.
Since that's a big part of owning it, I would prefer to have something that looks good from that perspective over something that looks okay in pictures. If it shows a bit too big in pictures, thats not an issue.

36mm too small for my taste. Each to their own though.

I want to love the 36, but the bracelet being narrow and tapered is a deal breaker.

Just picked up the 36

When I first put it on I was a little concerned it wore too small since most of my watches run between 39 and 42. I wanted something that would fly under the radar though and something I could wear pretty much anywhere. The 36 is MUCH more comfortable than my other watches and it is my favorite to wear now. My eyes adjusted to it quickly. I can see some people liking the larger size but the 36 isn’t too small for anyone.

I have the 40mm. I am not a big guy but the 36 really is a little too small for me. Wrist size 7.

Explorer core is Legibility. Larger indices being lume filled help with aging eyes. 36 is cool if vintage and classic is your style. Beauty of living in the modern world we have the luxury to choose from either.

I had the same reaction when I tried on the 36 and passed on it for the 40. After a few months, I ended up not really liking the 40. It fit my wrist fine but there was too much dial for me. Now I'm back to the 36 and loving it. After a couple of days, the size looked right and it's so comfortable to wear.

Man, I swear threads like this don't help me at all!!! haha.

I am 6'4" about 240 lbs, with almost 8" wrist.

Everything tells me I should go for the 40mm (or a 39mm pre-owned).....But I'm still drawn to the 36mm. Even though the times I've tried it on at an AD it seemed really small on me, but I had also been wearing my GMT Master at the time I tried it on, so going from that to a 36mm Explorer seemed like a big difference. I do feel my sweet spot for watches is that 38-41mm.

But also, as others have said maybe after a little while I'll adjust to the smaller 36mm.

So torn! I got a bonus coming up in a few weeks & really considering an Explorer, but can't make up my mind on which size.

The 124270 size really does settle nicely in my experience (though my wrist isn’t quite as large).

I went from the 114270 to the current 36 and after about two days the proportions all clicked. I also have a BLNR now and don’t find the sizing too jarring. Haven’t ruled out moving up to the 40 but I worry about the idea of an Explorer with no functional bezel that’s about as big as a GMT.

It's a 35mm watch that wears more like a 34mm. But, definitely NOT a 36.

I find the 39mm to be the best size for the explorer.
