Damn, I swallowed the automatic Kool-aid about 20 years before your wife did. Sure love the paddle shifters, though!

This is my little setup. Running Manley ML10a’s being pushed with Manley Snappers. Had a pair of Bryson 4B’s (and still have them) but for working on music, I like the way the tube amps respond and push back. They don’t square wave and become harsh as fast. My “pre-amp” is a Dangerous ST and my DA is an Apogee 800 that I’ve had forever. I plan on upgrading the DA sometime this year though (I hope). I do mixing and mastering on this setup. |

As far as the tube vs. solid state behavior - it is much more the circuit topology, than the device choice. There are many tube amps that clip harshly (more traditional circuits), and there are zero feedback transistor amps that don't clip - they soften gradually. In reality we do not understand the differences between the devices. But if used in identical circuits (that is possible) they tend to minimize their differences. |

I like that attention to detail. :) It warms my heart to see people interested in good music and sound.

I agree with you completely. Without saying it, I was comparing my personal experience with the Snappers vs the Brystons. I had a set of Classé CA-400 (solid state) that would never clip or soften up. And if they could, getting them to that volume would have been uncomfortably loud (though clear), and specially not a volume to work at. |

We can easily slide into philosophical discussions here, which is well beyond the scope of this forum.
I am glad you like the Manlies... David was a colorful individual, I am not sure if these were designed by him, or later, after his departure. |

I've been hi-fi obsessive for nearly 30 years. I now use an SME Model 30/V with a Whest dual-mono phono stage, a modified Naim NAC 52, and ATC 150 SL AT. It's awesome, and honestly is the best sound I've heard in a domestic setting.

In 2 of my rooms I use sonos, I have a Naim Mu-so qb in my living room, for a one box streaming system I find it excellent. I am looking at auditioning a second generation Mu-so which is the next step up from what I have now. My "one boxer" is not in the same league as many systems here, but, to be honest, nor is my hearing on an even keel with their owners, I do look enviously at their systems though.

I pulled my only remaining tape deck out of its retirement. It took quite an effort to make it run again - cleaning, working out the levers and buttons, but now it is doing fine, recording at 15ips 2 track. Will try to record hi-res streaming files on it, through a tube DAC.

I just took some dreadful pics, so I won't hurt your eyes by posting them here. Professional pics here:

Started reading this thread and it got me stumbling down memory lane and trying to remember what I had once upon a time. I couldn't remember the name so I did a bunch of searches and lo and behold I found them.
Not sure how good they were but they didn't make my move to the US I don't think. |

My brother was in the Navy in the 80’s and brought back a Sansui set up that he bought in Japan. Still has it. I had a great set up but can’t remember the brand. It started with a B but wasn’t a B&O. Very thin with no knobs. It had slides on it.

Would anyone be impressed if I posted pics of my Bose Acoustamas 10? It cost almost $800!

BTW, on a serious note, Bose just announced the new noise-cancelling headphones to replace the QC35, I think they are called the M700. I listen constantly to my 35s, enjoy them very much. They are pretty beat up so am looking forward to getting the new ones.

I always wanted four Bose 901's but never got them. My fraternity had a pair of them hanging from the ceiling behind the bar.
When we put our addition on our house I briefly had plans for a media room. My grand scheme involved Martin Logan Monolith electrostatic speakers and Krell Digital equipment. When I priced it all out I realized what a pipe dream it was. It might have been different if I was truly passionate about music, or if I was in the music business. But as somebody for whom even the Bose 901's would be overkill, that Krell/Martin Logan setup was like using an atomic bomb to kill a single gopher. We ended up getting a nice plasma tv and an in-wall surround system with Polk components. Mid-range stuff but plenty of punch for us and the room. For a stereo I got a Bang & Olufson BeoSound unit. Does the trick for us.

Robert, I purchased a pair of Polk SDA-2A speakers in the mid 1980s and I enjoyed them immensely for years. Great company.
