It's like electronic music; KraftWerk started it, and for 20 years everything seemed derivative because it was. So it is with iconic watches. If the most sincere form of flattery is imitation, then Rolex should feel very flattered.

Now there are many brands that use similar designs, myself have not got any
problem with those. Now fakes made to desieve well thats a different matter.
Now is the Blancpain 50 fathoms, a Rolex rip off too.???

Now the Blancpain 50 fathoms was in production almost a year before the Rolex Sub. Is the Rolex sub below a homage or a rip off to the Blancpain, there is a unmistakable striking resemblance. And the first Rolex model sub had plain stick hands as well, and a different bezel with no minute markers.

Early Rolex Sub.

The chevron or "Mercedes" fugure on the hour hand seems very popular across several brands. Is this horological tradition, or just more of the same designer-domino effect? Does anyone know who oput the first chevron on a watch hand?

Yes, good point. I hadn't taken that into account. A watch must have Indiglo.

Who would wear it?

I have nothing against wearing a Timex- I have owned plenty of them.

But who would own a Timex that so desperately wanted to be seen as a Rolex?

Only a player-hater.

Funny you pointed this out. I was checking out a vintage watch book and saw the earliest Blancpain Fifty Fathoms watch and it looked almost identical to the Sub. It didn't give an exact date, just said 50's. If this was prior to the Sub, looks like Rolex stole the look!

You would be corect sir, Rolex did take a bit of creative licence from Blancpain when designing the submariner.

However, Rolex made the design Iconic, so I'll give them the edge.
