Pre owned sub or explorer ????

Hi guys

I've made a few posts over the last few weeks whilst I've been doing my research.

I like the submariner and the Explorer II.

I think I'm going to have to go down the secondhand/pre owned route. My budget is £2,500. Do you think this is achievable ?

Can anyone recommend a reputable jewler to buy from, I'm based in northwest England. I have seen some watches on eBay but am worried I could get ripped off with a copy.

Also seen a few pre owned in various shop windows for about £4,000, that seems a lot to me as I could properly get a new one for £5,000

Thanks in advance

Between your two choices, I would definitely go Submariner. It's an iconic piece that looks great on any occasion. I've never been a fan of the ExpII myself, but go with the one that makes you happiest. Let us know what you choose and I hope you find one with your budget. Good luck!

Morning and welcome.....for your budget an Explorer 11 is closer but you may need to stretch your budget to closer to £3k.......prices appear cheaper in the States but I've never bought one outside of the UK......
I picked up a GMT at Christmas on ebay for £2800 with box and papers but I don't expect to get another one near that.
Good luck and enjoy

The Explorer II is usually seen for about £500 more than the Sub. Get whichever you like best. Prices in the UK seem a little higher than they do in Australia and the US.

My advice would be to take your time and be patient. There will be a point in your research that you realize the watch you are meant to have. Both of those are great models.

Avoid ebay.

In the UK look at:

www.theoldwatchshop.com

www.chronomaster.co.uk

£2500 is a bit low but you should just pick up an old Explorer II without papers for this.

£3000 - £3500 will get you a much nicer selection.

You are right in that over £4000 you can buy new old stock from ADs. John Pass in Crewe is an AD with a good pre-owned selection but you will have to phone them to find out what's in stock.

Good luck! Let us know what you find.

Just NB if you are thinking about a Submariner, probably best to aim for this straight away, rather than buying a compromise, flipping it, and losing money in the process!

I love the Explorer but I own the Sub. If I had to have just one it would be the Sub all day long. Not sure about your budget and prices in England. I would say to be very careful of EBay. Personally I would stay right here on TRF as there are many great sellers. Best of luck and please post pics when you get it.
Cheers

Would agree that £2500 seems a bit low - probably looking at £3500 to £4000 for something fairly good- In any event, you cant go wrong with either the Sub or the Explorer!
