Anyone here sell/trade multiple pieces for one grail? Was it worth it?

Have built up a nice little collection over the years, but as the collection grows, many of the pieces just sit in a box. I only have so many wrists, and my toddler and cats could care less what's on my wrist working from home, so I don't even rotate that much.

Lately I have been debating liquidating several pieces to acquire a personal grail - a 116520 Daytona (I prefer the steel bezel, though would never turn a 116500 down if offered one).

Who here has sold multiple staples for one watch? Happy you did in the long run, or did the novelty of the grail wear off?

Someone talk me into or out of it!

Current collection (indicating which I would sell/trade for a 116520):
- 1986/7 168000 Sub (sell)
- 114270 Explorer (sell)
- "Sapphire Sandwich" Omega Speedy (sell)
- Cartier Santos Medium (sell, maybe)
- 2020 126710 "Batgirl" GMT (keep, son's birth year)
- 1986 16753 "Rootbeer" GMT (keep, my birth year)
- 1956 Oyster Precision (keep, father's birth year)

I usually buy it first then let go of the others. Because don’t know how I’ll feel with it for a little while.

You've already got 3 that you're going to keep for sentimental reasons. If you want to thin out the collection, then I would move the Explorer, the Omega, and the Cartier, but would keep the Sub.

As to liquidating for a grail, I'm not a fan. You will have less choice and the novelty likely will wear off. This is particularly true if you discover that the watch you've lusted after for years ain't all that. Then what will you do? As Mr. Spock said in the Star Trek episode titled Amok Time, "After a time, you may find that having is not so pleasing a thing after all as wanting. It is not logical, but it is often true." Words to live by, IMHO.

I just did this about 3 weeks ago. 1000% percent worth it. I have never been happier with a watch in my entire life. I always knew since it was released that this was my end game. Feels great. BTW, mostly everyone on this forum will try to talk you out of it.

Traded 124060, 126613LB, 16570 and Omega Speedmaster
for:

My ultimate goal is to be a one-watch guy. It is not something that I am ready for at the moment but when I am, I'll be absolutely OK selling everything for that one "grail"

Yes I did it but!.... here is where you REALLY need to be honest with yourself.
How bad do you want what you want and ARE YOU going to be satisfied with one or 2 watches in your collection ? ALot of people who are collectors are not.
You have to ask yourself that.... only you can decide.

Absolutely worth it. I’m a big believer in quality over quantity, especially if you have numerous pieces that aren’t getting wrist time. I’d take 1 Ferrari over 20 Camrys any day.

If you’re not wearing/enjoying watches, they don’t have strong sentimental value and just sit in your watch box I would sell/trade them.

I did something similar for my first AP years ago. My “one” grail and a few nice pieces to rotate would be my perfect collection. Didn’t last long and eventually had a dozen AP “grails”. I’ve actually got rid of most and now focusing not on grails but watches I enjoy wearing everyday and for everything I do. Have a few grails out there but know they wouldn’t get must wrist time so haven’t pulled the trigger.

Depends on the collector. Some of us prefer some variety.

Once you have your grail then you will find yourself bored and want to buy something else. Rolex is going to continue to release new product every year. It’s a never ending cycle for collectors unless you decided to find a new hobby.

I am not a fan of having multiple watches, so I would definitely condense and get something you will wear the heck out of.

I have done it before, and never looked back

I agree there is no such thing as an attainable grail. I only use the term because it's so commonly used. In this case I bought my ultimate, favorite, attainable watch. My grail is a repeater. That's a true grail as it is unattainable for me.

For a ceramic Daytona, yes.

For a steel bezel Daytona, maybe.

That's probably about $18-$25k depending on where/how you sell. You could get a two-tone, but not a solid.

You could get a 116520, or close and add a few thousand.

Do you wear your birth year watches often?

If the watches you are thinking of trading aren’t getting wrist time that tells you what you need to know. I would go for it.

I would sell/trade the Explorer, Cartier, and Speedy and throw some cash in with it to get the Daytona. Keep the sub. You will still have Chrono/Diver/GMT bases covered with the vintage rootbeer and oyster when you are in the mood to be a little different.

I agree on the Submariner, it’s a relatively rare transitional model made for roughly 1 year. If you’re a Submariner enthusiast, it’s a neat one to have

In my opinion the idea of a birth year watch gets old if the watch itself isn't badass. I'd consolidate as many as you can into the watch you really want
