Date & Air King
To all of you experts out there:
Why does Rolex seem to avoid promoting the Date & Air King model? Even on their official web site these are "hidden" under the Oyster Perpetual heading; unlike other models like the Datejust or sports models one has to really look for them to find them on their site. Does Rolex deem these as inferior products to their other products? I own a TT Date from approximately 2005, do these Date models have the same mnovement as the Datejusts? The sales person in Ben Bridge said they do when I purchased the piece. I believe they have twin lock crowns and tested to 100m for water resistant am I correct? What are the differences between a Date and Datejust aside from one being 34mm and the other 36mm. Thanks! |

I don't perceive it as you describe. The website showcases the OP date and Air King under their own special category, hallmarking their special place in history. I don't consider them hidden in any way nor do I have to 'really look' for them.

I know we are working on getting the whole collection
Started with my Sub... The Wife's first was the Ladies Date Just, then a Mid Size Date Just... And the latest an Air King... Looks like a No Date is next for her.. They are all a little different and special and none are duds

In my opinion, I think the Datejust is more popular then the Date and Air-King models. I owned a 2000 15200 Date. I got bored with it and sold it and purchased my DJ. It was the best decision I ever made. To each their own, I guess, If I was buying my first Rolex I would go with the DJ over the Date and Air-King.

The Sub ND wasn't even on their website until a month ago. The Oyster Perpetual and the Cellinni just happen to be in another category.

I would urge the original poster to avoid drawing any conclusions about popularity or sales figures from viewing the Rolex web site. Rolex chooses not to place its entire catalog online and so does not devote the bandwidth to showcasing each and every model, bracedlet opetion or dial choice.
Keep in mind that here in the Rolex Forums world, there is a distinct bias towards a few models because that's what the participants tend to purchase or lust after. Out in the real world, where real people don't obsess over every nick and ding on their watch case, or wring their hands over a lost or gained two second interval or endlessly debate the virtues of polished center links over brushed finish, the Rolex brand is just considered a fine watch along with the status that goes along with it, and so, in that universe, Date and Air King models have as much validity as any other model. They have fewer dial and metal choices, but the movements are exactly the same as their 36 or 39 or 41mm brethren. |

oysterdavid - do you REALLY believe what you wrote?
of course they are going to market their more expensive watches. More profit. Maybe not the real small sellers like diamond encrusted ladies watches... What does GM advertise more? cadillacs with leather or an Aveo ? they probably make more on the caddy engine option upgrade then selling en entire base vehicle to an entry level buyer they dont push the entry level models because they want you to buy an explorer or something else. it hs nothing to do with bandwith. dial options they may pass on marketing and leave in the hands of the ADs. |

Not sure why they don't push it. My Girlfriend loves her Rolex 1500 Date (So Do I----Used To Own it ) I still get to see it though

Jeremy, they are great watches. i am not surprised you love yours. i miss my AKDate very much. i just think they make so much more on the sale of a sub... that they have a more laissez-faire marketing approach on certain lower priced models
