Should I sell my current collection for a AP RO?

If it is what you want, go for it. Personally though, I think ROs are ugly, and I probably also would not want to sell a gift from my parents, and so I would not personally be going this route.

Keep the gmt and sell the others. Or rather, if one holds a special place in your heart then keep that one.

I sold a watch to trade up and I somewhat regret it based on the sentimental value. It was not a gift, but had it have been a gift from a parent I would have never thought of selling it.

You can always add an RO later but you may regret selling a gift from your parents so I would say no.

Well,If your parents are ok with trading these for your grail, it’s ok.

My father who was a great collector of watches, had no problem trading with his buddies or buy from them, etc in the late 197’s to the 1980’s.

You are young and having a classic AP puts you in a special one watch; you habe then the story is that su get “older” you are selecting in your own your first true grail

You have time to get other Cartier/Rolex later and the narrative and potential regrets are part of watch collecting.
I only regret trading my VC blue dial overseas but don’t loose any sleep either. My collection is strong and my favorites are still there.

You will want other watches once you get to one , but hard work, saving and maybe a new gift brings the next one eventually.

This is the watch my parents gave me as a high-school-graduation/going-to-college gift. It’s over 40 years old and I still wear it. It has a great patina, and the only service it’s ever needed was a mainspring replacement with re-oil and re-gasket.

My parents are gone now, and I think of them and the evening they gave it to me every time I put it on. I’d hang on to the gifts from your parents.

It's all been said in this thread, but just to add another voice to the vast majority - think very VERY long and very VERY carefully before parting with a parental gift if it holds any sentimental value to you whatsoever. As the years go by stuff like that will likely become much more important to you (certainly more important than just chasing the "latest big thing"), and once it's gone, it's gone.

I considered the Brick for a bit but decided my Daytona wasn't worth it. I'll pretend to have a Royal Oak. Maybe someday I'll cave but for now a placebo will have to do.

So. Keep the gifts. Add to your collection when you can. You are young and have plenty of time.

What you have is actually very nice. RO is hot right now but remember WR is only 50m and the lume is poor compared to Rolex. The watch wears very big for 41mm. The flat surfaces are easily scratched. Horizontal marks really stand out against the satin finish. Don't get me wrong the RO is a great watch but I would get it when you can rotate out of it, not trade everything to get it.

I would keep the GMT both for both the sentimental value and because it’s a great piece. I’d sell the other two (Cartier first) and definitely pursue the Royal Oak. The Royal Oak is a special watch. Some folks hate it, others love it. I thought I hated it until the first time I actually held one.

I’d never sell the GMT - what a lovely 18th birthday present from your parents, you’ll have it forever. Good luck!

I'm currently in my last year of my law degree, then hopefully doing a masters in corporate law. I already have a bachelors in psychology because I really love that field but decided to do another bachelor and masters.

I wouldn’t sell those. As others have mentioned, I’d keep that great collection and have the sentimental attachment grow. Wait and work towards the AP as a separate plan.

I would keep your current collection which is quite impressive. Buy the RO when you have enough money. Nothing like saving for something you really want. You will appreciate it more too.

I wish I had kept more gifts from my family when I was young. Now that my parents are gone, I miss the tangible things that remind me of them.

I would keep the gifts and sell the rest. You have your entire life to save up for another watch.

25 year old here who found myself in the same predicament. My grandfather gifted me a rolex and patek, years later i wanted an AP as its always been my favorite brand and i was coming close to being able to buy it myself. I thought about selling the rolex as its a datejust that i dont love, but when it came down to it i couldnt sell it.
The sentimental value was more important than the couple thousand that would go toward a new watch.

Keep them, be patient, and the AP will be all the more exciting and sentimental when the time comes. Thats what i did and now my 26315st is an addition to an already meaningful collection.
