what do you buy when the Japanese Yen is at a 34 year low?

Just curious about your thoughts on this from an investing standpoint. I'm not talking about vacationing in japan or trying to buy goods in Japan on vacation.

More so- what would be a good investment or money move now when the yen is weak. I looked at the Japan stock index and it's at a peak right now.

I guess perhaps you could just buy Yen if you think the Yen will get stronger. Anything else? The idea would be to buy low now and sell higher once the yen improves.

I originally heard the reference here, and it's stuck with me since.

Don't try to catch falling knives.

YMMV

I just bought a pristine Seamaster 2254.50 from a Japanese watch dealer for cheaper than I've seen the most beat up examples for sale here in the states. And I lucked out and didn't have to pay any customs for some reason either. I don't try to time the markets when it comes to investing so I can't offer any advice there but it does seem like a good opportunity to buy goods from Japan

Here’s another saying (paraphrased): “Be fearful when others are greedy, and greedy when others are fearful…”

Or my own saying “nearly every wise saying has an opposite and equally wise saying.”

Watches, cameras, other electronic equipment. Yodobashi is an incredible store and they are everywhere. Also, treats to take back (they will only last a few months). Bring an empty suitcase whenever you goto Japan.

Ha, that's Buffet, one of my personal heroes. I don't think he's buying up the Yen at the moment speaking to the current situation though. last I heard he's hoarding cash because the "knives" are still falling so to speak. still time plenty of time before people should get greedy I think.

Nice vintage Rolex over there. They seem to be the type that covet their watches. Nice examples of neo-vintage all over.

There aren’t any knives falling right now when it comes to the market. But I did hear the same thing about Buffet. He’s not buying any stock right now. I’m not sure how true that is, but if that’s the case, then maybe he thinks the market is too high and he’s waiting for a correction.

I agree with you. I'm thinking about putting $10K in the Invesco CurrencyShares Japanese Yen Trust (FXY). However, I always hesitant to because of the 0.4% expense ratio and it would be a longer term play. I'm used to low expense ratios of vanguard index funds or stocks with no expense ratio.

However, that 5 year chart of FXY looks attractive to me.

An apartment in Japan. In America we call them watch boxes. Seriously though watching Tokyo vice has me wanting to go to Japan badly.

He’s had to have taken a pretty big hit with the downturn in Apple … isn’t he their largest shareholder?
