I’m not fussed one way or the other on nicknames, but that’s bad … really bad

I prefer to use the reference numbers. They really aren’t all that difficult to remember.

I get that some pieces have nicknames, but in general I don’t see the need to have a nickname ready for every single piece that hits the market.

Why? Just....why?

I actually genuinely don't get why someone would try to coin that name for it. They may as well call it the "Coat Hanger", or the "Mullet" for all the relevance that name has. Pathetic.

Not a Rolex... but....

I took my wife to an amazing Lange event a few months ago.

That night I was talking to her about the Zeitwerk I loved. She was trying to remember which it was.

She then said, "Oh, the T-shirt".

Now ever since, I just can't look at the Zeitwerk the same.

They’re all pretty bad although I am partial to “Smurf” as I grew up reading “Les Schtroumpfs”. But then again I’m a model number guy.

Yeah, to me the nicknames sort of spoil the fun. They just come off silly and demeaning to the brand.

I saw that the other day. What a bad bad name, and with a name like that, they need to explain why it’s called that

I, too, am partial to the Smurf I do also try to remember most model numbers, or at least number sequences that span model generations.

The nicknames do have a "social media influencer" whiff about them, don't they...

Yeh! I want to know the backstory to this rebranding attempt.

Worst nicknames…all of them. Even better are the nicknames relative to which bracelet they come with like that changes something.

I think these nicknames are somehow helpful… even though some of us hate them, we all know what they mean - all these cokes, pepsis, kermits, cookie monsters, buttgirls and jubilees, etc… etc… :))

Buttgirls? Never heard that one. Someone needs to clue me in, so I can respond with appropriate disdain…..

Grand Seiko has some pretty weird nicknames too, and this also definitely gets made fun of.

I apologize in advance for the profanity, but I remember a while ago on reddit someone was selling a white textured dial GS that they personally nicknamed the "cum rag" to drive up interest. It's now the top result when you search "Grand Seiko" on /r/watchexchange.

And because each GS dial has to have some ridiculous inspiration story behind it, one helpful commenter delivered:

Quote:
"Inspired by the experiences and tools of the janitorial staff of the famed hostess bars of Roppongi, Tokyo's after-hours district where businessmen enjoy late hour trysts while foregoing both the needs of their family at home and those of their employer during business hours the next day, the beautifully textured dial is patterned after the stiffened cleaning cum rags that prepare the club for the next guest. After awakening from a drunken stupor on the underground rail, this dial's lack of contrast is designed to minimally stress the vision of the somnolent reveler until he has enough consciousness to navigate the streets of Tokyo, safely returning to the office never having set foot at home."
