After being a father and starts business travel, a beater/second watch is necessary to me.

Mountain Biking with kids, water park, 800 miles road trip with kids, train/metro station in China. Will you wear your favorite watch? lol

Target $35 Timex Ironman, Amazon $12 Casio Ae1000w are really nice beater. Guarantee working and low profile. Maybe the same watch that 1st grade kid wearing. But I am sure you won't get in trouble and you won't feel bad if they are lost

I'm in total agreement with Dan Pierce on this. Seiko SKX 007,009. What a lot of watch for the money!

The Steinharts are too much of Rolex look alikes for my taste, so I went with this one (SRP637):

The fit and finish level is well above what you would expect at that price-point.
Wow, great picture. I may have to pick one of those up.

Thanks ! It's slightly modded, mind you: bracelet is after market, the stock one is perfectly adequate but a bit flashy for such a tool-ish watch IMO. And the hands are from the previous model. But even with the added costs it was still below 400 euros.

Here it is with the original hands:

The bezel is not the easiest to operate, that's why I'm buying the Sumo, but the Seiko diver's DNA is so strong on this one that I think I will still keep it.
It's like the love child of a Tuna and a Monster...

And it's running consistently at +2 spd.

But the best part is that after years of training in convincing the wife that I needed to spend some thousands in another Rolex, getting the blessing for another one of these is so easy that is almost no fun !

Yes! Here for the baby tuna love!

And I wholeheartedly subscribe to the philosophy that one man's beater is another man's grail. I treat all the same, as if they were all priceless.

I'm a fan of these and get compliments as often as the higher end luxury ones.

I think your beater watch should be just that, a watch that you don't really care if it takes a beating, really depends on your sensibilities, G-Shock isn't a bad choice of you like it, otherwise a Tissot T touch offers similar functionality, and more stylish, can find a nice one under $500.

A good beater is somethings g that you will take on vacation and be happy to wear it while going out in the evenings, just something to consider.

Perhaps the Oris Diver Sixty-Five? It's cheaper than the Tudor BB and is really quite lovely. Definitely a bang for buck watch imho especially if you like the neo-vintage look.

Marathon GSAR is always a great choice as it has an eta movement and the lume is out of this world. Under a grand, built like a tank, plain, and great water resistance.

I have these. However, in truth, the BB's have never seen saltwater due to the rusting issue I've read about on here. Yes, I know it's a minor issue. The Seiko I use as a fishing watch as I don't want fish guts on a nato or leather, but have only been twice recently. In the end, sub is my go to for everything.

Was absolutely dead set on one and went to buy one the other day. Beautiful watch and great price point. However, I'm not a big guy, but it wears very small. Made me reconsider.

Truth be told I'm quite big and hefty and my wrists are about 7 3/4". The watch fits me fine. You could try wearing it on a Nato and it should look a bit bigger. 👍🏻

If the latter, then it could happen anywhere in the world and reemphasizes my notion that there is typically no safer location for my watches than on my wrist.
Hi. It was stolen in a nightclub in Barcelona. The 8 hour wait in the police station the next morning was not fun!

I own and adore my BLNR. It's a keeper. But there will always be times when such a watch isn't appropriate, and for that reason, I'd be more comfortable wearing an alternative watch, which, as you say, should ideally have some horological significance (hence why I've chosen the 007)

Quite possibly. It was more of a feel thing than look thing. Am used to diving watches. May try again.

I think I remember an older post. Was this when you came out of bathroom?

Things always disappear when I go to a club. I shouldn't go. But it's usually unplanned :)

What do you mean by BB? The use of the beater term depends on ones budget, I see my BLNR as a beater when traveling, for some people that's crazy as a watch that price should not be used as a beater, sorry that's how I used mine…

To the OP, how did you get your watch stolen in Barcelona? Off your wrist pickpocket style? In a violent way? or other?

It was pick-pocketed :-(

In other news, my seiko arrived yesterday and i've just put it on a nato strap. Thanks again for all the advice, friends.

Great choice on the Seiko! You can't beat a Seiko automatic at that price point.

At a slightly higher price point, you can go with a Swiss ETA movement, but I think you made an excellent choice with the Seiko.

+1 for Bernhardt watches based on some of the reviews I read. I just purchased the Binnacle Diver...
