just 2 mm?
I went to a couple of ADs at the Stanford Shopping Center in Palo Alto today to check out watches, including the Explorer, which I have been thinking of getting.
I was surprised by how small the Explorer seemed, perhaps because I've been looking at blown-up pics on the 'net. Anyway, it also seemed smaller than the Datejust, but both are supposed to be 36 mm. Any ideas as to why? Is it because of the different bezels? Of course, there are smooth bezel DJs. Maybe I'm just crazy, but it looked a lot more similar to the AK and the Date, which are 34 mm. Probably in my head. BTW, to GMT fans in Silicon Valley, Gleim had both a SS and a Gold GMT-IIc and Shreve had both a pepsi bezel and a coke bezel GMT-II. Could there be a 3186 lurking in one of those? |

Partly an illusion based on design. My Omega is about 40MM and my Fortis B-42 Cosmonaut is of course 42MM. The Fortis seems WAY bigger but mostly because the way the bezel sits on the watch extended a tiny bit outward from the case and the chapter ring is sloped.
With the Omega the bezel is in line with the case, you can not see the chapter ring really unless you tilt it and the insert leaves quite a bit of space at the edge which is what makes it appear to be so much smaller than my other watch. So many factors can make you pick up on that. |

If you compare the Explorer (which still has the old-style "DJ" case) with a current DJ, you will note that the lugs of the new DJ's have been beefed up a bit. This might be the reason for the optical illusion since - as you state - both still are 40 mm.
Same thing applies to the GMT IIc, imho. The "supercase" makes it look much bigger than the Sub Date although they're both 40 mm. watches.

Personally, I find that the smooth bezel on the DJ models makes the watch appear smaller....I prefer the fluted bezel which seems to add size/chunkiness to the case.
I also think that the Explorer looks small-ish compared to the DJ models. The smooth bezel on the Explorer is NOT the same smooth bezel found on the DJ either. |

Gleim and Shreve are both decent AD's at Stanford, but you're unlikely to find much of a cost savings. Try Jade Galore in Cupertino/Milpitas/Chinatown.

It depends on the wrist size. For me it is the max size watch
