Hey guys, here we have a rare, 1962, 5512 Submariner with an “Exclamation Point Dial,” which you can see at the 6 o'clock marker. This Sub has a gloss dial with Radium markers which ultimately makes this piece more valuable due to the manufacturer discontinuing the use of Radium used in the early 60’s. Radium was discontinued due to the severe illnesses employees suffered, such as, “The 5 Radium Girls” in the early 20’s. When the brush tips were worn, to save cost, they were instructed by supervisors to shape the brush to form a tip using their mouth, next dipping in Radium paste, and then applying the markers to the dial repeatedly.

Rolex used the “Exclamation Point” as its first official marking on Radium dials in the 50’s to 1962 (some 1963’s as well due to old inventory) to identify that the radiation levels had been adjusted per the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) to be safe for wearing (the chapter ring was used before and during the “Exclamation Point” era).

Per the photos below, this watch was in major need of a periodic cleaning. The images below show before and after pictures of what was an unreliable and dry movement, to a beautiful, reliable Rolex 1560 movement. As many of you are aware, it is crucial to get your timepieces serviced which is similar to getting the oil changed in your car for optimum performance so that you, too, can hand the piece on to the next generation.

For the next "Watch of the Month", we will feature a MK l Double Red Sea Dweller with a prototype Rolex bracelet.

what is the story behind the replacement hands were they too damaged to be relumed ?
I'm also -and I am certainly not an authority- puzzled by the dial, never seen this font on 62 exclamation point sub dials?

BTW - I thought it was Exclamation dials differentiated SWISS with Tritium from SWISS with Radium.

Then there were Underlines. The radiation count on ! dials was higher than the T SWISS < 25

Philip, what is the serial number of the one you worked on? This one is 661xxx, with a 1 61 case back. It also still has brass reversing wheels and butterfly rotor.

That's a beautiful watch as well, I'll update you with the serial number on Monday.

The original reversing wheels and butterfly rotor add a very unique/original look that I love. We actually have a few of both for the lovers out there.

The serial number to this one is, 764xxx
