Why do people buy a Submariner (116610) over a GMT-Master (116710)

i have no idea other than personal preference. i have a gmt2c and no sub.

I agree with you! The GMT IIc is all black, the bezel fonts are bold and too large, which makes it look very dull yet busy.

In the end I went with a pre-owned GMT II, which is more "cheerful", and has a red GMT hand that matches the bezel.

I Picked the sub c because I didn't like the pcls. Price wasn't an option because I could have got the gmt for the same as my sub c.

Grew up wanting a sub and I thought the new sub would be a great start.

Good question. I have no idea why.
The 24hr hand is a function that anyone might someday use and the bidirectional bezel is handy every day for timing things.
I can't imagine that more than a handful of average folks have exceeded the depth rating of a GMT and thought 'Damn! I'm so deep I should've bought a Sub.'
They both tell time just fine but IMO the real life usefulness of the extras that the GMT brings to the table exceeds the blanket argument of simply 'being an icon'. (as defined by who?)
For me, when facing a decision like this, I address the main function of the item (telling time) and then ask 'What else can it do?'
As my only Rolex the GMT simply does more.

Sub is just a more straight forward watch. The advantages of the sub date over the GMT are the very absence of a 24 hour hand and the quick set date feature. However well designed or however well used to the 24 hour hand you are it's still an added distraction for the most part.

I opted for the Sub C over the GMT IIc for a number of reasons:

PCL's =
Not a fan of the busy bezel on the GMT
Prefer the glidelock clasp & the overall look of the Sub far more.

I have plenty of love for the GMT just not the ceramic version.

I have been thinking of changing my GMT Master II Coke bezel for a solid black one to have the best of both worlds.

The solid black bezel similar of the sub and the 2nd time zone function.

What do you guys think? a good idea?

I really wanted to buy a Sub but I came across an AWESOME deal for my GMT so I got the coke bezel which is why Im thinking of going solid black.

It's funny how people are different. I love the GMT for the exact reason people don't like it. I love the look of the bezel. To me it seems equally balanced with digits in equal proportion on both sides. Also, I'm one of the only few that likes the PCL. It takes a sport watch and dresses it up a bit. So now you can wear it with a pair of jeans or a suit. However, the sub isn't a bad choice either, but my pick is the GMT.

I like the GMT function, but I am not impressed by the green hand and found the bezel too busy. So I bought an Explorer II CN.

1. A more clean bezel, (the GMTIIC is too busy)

2. A more clean dial (No green as the GMTIIC)

3. Fully brushed bracelet

4. 300m deapht rating

5. Glidelock

6. More iconic model

7. Slighty thicker

These are the reasons why I choosed the SubC over the GMTIIC, if the GMTIIC had a red GMT hand and Red text and the option as the old models with Black, Red/Blue and Red/Black bezel then I think the GMTIIC would be a more serious contender!

I did the same thing. I traded in my less than 1 year old GMT C for a new Sub C which just arrived yesterday. Both are fabulous watches. I think at the end of the day the GMT was just a tad too much bling for me.

For the question of iconic, I think the Rolex brand is iconic enough to encompass all models.

Copycat world
James Bond connection;
But wait, if this was really true why would people not buy up the Sub(non-date) the closest to the Bond watch. The Sub-c is not even close to the Sub Dalton wore as James Bond.
I would buy the GMTc over the Sub-c but I have a classic 1675 and other GMT watches to do the job.
I have had 3 Subs, but the only one I would buy today would be the 18Kt Bluesly.
Depth ratings. If this is really an issue, buy a Deep Sea.
And last, some people have a hard enough time "telling time" much less tracking 3 time zones.

Both are great watches. I travel quite a bit so GMT works better for me. My wife gets the sub now.

the sub has the glow in the dark pip on the bezel and the gmt doesn't.

I like both, but I'll tell you what. I read an article on the reason why the sub has a better depth rating, and it may be different now, but they said that because the case back on the gmt is thinner, under only moderate pressure it actually starts to flex where the Sub won't, and while I'll never dive 300m deep, or even 50m for that matter, the idea of my Sub C's case being stronger makes me feel good, even if it's just in my mind, and it usually is. :)

One point about relative thickness-the Gmt has higher side walls (due I believe because the 24 hr complication adds thickness to the mechanism, whereas the sub has shallower side walls and thicker caseback. With the beveled caseback sitting "into" your wrist the sub seems to fit lower than the gmt.
I have worn a dive watch for 20 years and find the timing bezel really useful for all sorts of things ( parking meters, cooking, etc. ). I have never felt the need for a second time zone-I can keep track of the time when I'm traveling well enough by memory. So for me the gmt function would be irrelevant.

and it looks better than the GMT

Just my very personal opinion! Others may like the GMT better...
