Thoughts on the Wimbledon Dial

I was at my AD a few months asking for a 36mm datejust in either blue or black with a jubilee. He pulls out a Wimbledon dial 36 while its not a bad looking watch, I just can't get on board with that dark dial and Roman numerals.

I prefer stick indices with either black, blue, or silver. How do others feel about the Wimbledon Dials in general? Would you wear one or are you like me where I appreciate it but I wouldn't buy it.

Get the one you want. I am holding out for a blue stick indices DJ. If all goes well, will be picking one up tomorrow. At these prices, you shouldn't be settling for something else.

Don't settle. The Wimbledon is basically the ugliest DJ ever made. Wait for the 36mm that you actually want.

If it's not your favorite then don't settle. Personally the fluted, blue index on jubilee is my favorite.

The first time I looked at it, I did not like it at all. Why would you have lume on one of the 12 hour markers only I said. But the more I look, the more I like it. I think because it is a special variant of the DJ model, it's easiest to recognize. Because to me, when you wear a DJ, it's kind of like that watch that everybody has. But the Wimbelton is just a bit different that you can instantly recognize it as different. I think some will think it's better, some will think it's worse. I wouldn't buy it right away if it wasn't something that you were seeking. But I'd keep it on my radar and come back to see if it grows on you.

I just received my 36 on oyster and rose gold for my wife. I'm going to try hard not to wear it and leave it exclusively for my wife (unlike the TT explorer). So comparing to the explorer, the dial is definitely interesting. The crown on 12 oclock stands out more to my eyes. And the fluted bezel makes the watch look bigger than a 36. The bracelet is also wider than the explorer which makes it look bigger also. But I like the clasp better in the explorer. The hour and minute needle is thicker, and easier to read on the explorer. It's also easier to see the exact minute between the hour markers on the explorer. But in terms of gold, I find it easier to wear the rose gold because in many lighting condition, you don't even notice that it's gold, only that it has a warm feeling.

I still have the 41DJ Wimbelton with jubilee on waitlist, although I may not actually purchase it now that I already have the 36, or maybe it'll be nice that it'll be a matching pair. But I'll have to see when it's actually on my wrist before i make the decision.

I owned one for a bit but grew to dislike it for two reasons.

1. I think it's a watch that looks better in pictures
2. The font on the numerals seemed almost graffiti-esque to me

That said I do still see pictures and wonder if I should give it a second shot some day. YMMV

I love my 41 rose gold. It sucks in low light but is a gem in artificial or natural light.

Thoughts on the Wimbledon Dial

I love mine. I think the dial has a lot of character. Roman numerals are classy and interesting. Green and slate grey color combo very cool. I personally think the white 9 o’clock marker works to add some pop and also balances out the 3 o’clock cyclops.

People complaining about lack of lume I will never understand. Rolex lume is dull at best and dissipates quickly. Not very useful in real world scenarios so I do not miss it.

Like the Explorer I and Air-King, the dial is a bit polarizing.

On the DJ, I think the stick indices on a solid color dial looks a bit bland. I do however like the motif dials.

To each their own of course.

I think it’s a bit more interesting than the basic stick dials. Some drawbacks though is the lume at 9 is kind of a strange choice. Also it’s one of the least legible watches with similar looking grey hands on a grey dial and then the cyclops obscuring it so you can’t quickly tell which hand is which if they’re anywhere near the cyclops. Also in low light pretty much forget about telling the time.

I absolutely love mine. My wife picked up the oyster and shortly after picked up mine on jubilee. It was never on my radar until I had seen hers.

Nice set. I've been thinking about the one on the right myself.

Side note, do you stop all your watches at that exact time? I notice the crown is pulled on the oyster on the left.

In my opinion the dial
really stands out when you get the two tone Wimbledon.

Lol, no. I had probably set the time for the photo and forgot to screw the crown back in. Good eye!

Makes no sense to have the Lume at 9 only.

You’re probably right about that. But it’s Rolex. They can do whatever they want, and it will be an instant hit…with long waiting lists and crazy resell prices. At least in the current era.

Totally agree.

It’s the most messed up DJ dial.

I have never liked this watch. I know I’m in the minority here. I think the OP is also in the minority and the watch will not grow on him.

I just bought my Wimbledon last Friday, 41 mm stainless jubilee, fluted bezel. I have owned and sold a number of Rolexes and feel this datejust is the one for me. I know beauty is personal and my opinions are simply mine. I like the subtle dial, the pop of the Roman numerals and the versatility of this watch. I recently sold a root beer as I felt it was too flashy and a 36 mm fluted blue dial stainless datejust as I just bought the GS Lake Suwa which has the most wonderful complex blue dial and didn’t need both watches. It’s great to be able to share experiences and opinions. For me, the Wimbledon is great because it is less flashy.

I was offered one by my AD. I tried to love it but wasn't excited. And I agree with earlier poster, looks better in pictures.... And that is why they make different configuration. Buy what YOU love irregardless of what the herd says....
