My Fav 2017 SIHH watch is from JLC!

I know all the expensive AP and PAM models did great this year at SIHH but I think JLC did a great addition to their Master Control series with very budgeted version.

Presenting - Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Control Date at 4900 Euros (Around $5 to $5.5K). It is 39mm diameter and 8.5mm thick. It can be great entry for many folks into JLC.

Agreed! That's the watch from SIHH that stole the show for me as well.

Have to disagree – for 39mm, it shouldn’t be suffering from small movement syndrome…which is all too evident from the date display.
It’s about high time the industry stopped using 11½ ligne movements in every thing, and started making 13 ligne for ≥40mm designs.

Agree, the date display seems to be dis-proportionally small.

Yes. But also why mess up a great dial with a date at all?

I've heard the brands say that the average customer expects their watch to tell the date if they are paying x thousand dollars for it (or in other cases they expect a second hand) but I find that arguement hard to believe. Surely in this case the average watch buyer's eye would pick a non date well balanced dial over this thing at least 75% of the time.

Agreed. It drove me nuts on my AP 15400 and to some degree on my 116600 as well.

I get your points about the small movement but at least the date window has been placed properly and the whole design is done to accommodate the date(and its small movement) and not done carelessly like IWC did to its pilots last year! Even that got rave reviews and I found that horrendous careless production!

For IWC, the date is just floating on the dial and here JLC has its place set for date on the dial!

As a Mark 18 owner, not sure I follow your objection to the date design.

Sorry but I mean that the date window is not in sync with the numerals or anywhere near the edge.
To give an example, you can pick any size Grand Seiko watch, be it 36mm, 37, 40, 42.. the date window is always at the edge and positioning and syncing to the dial.

Below are the 3 different dial watches and check their date window and it is not floating in the middle of the dial like IWC.
1) SBGR077 - 41mm
2) SBGV005 - 40mm
3) SBGX059 - 37mm

I am a big Seiko fan, too. But I like the black background of the date window, it makes it look like the date is floating. It is located closer to the center than the Seikos, but I do not find it objectionable. There is no accounting for taste!

I’m not convinced – if they’d made the inner circle’s diameter 1mm or so narrower, the black outline would’ve matched up with the date window’s outline.
As such, the whole thing would have looked far more homogenous.
Doing what they've done smacks of amateurism, and only serves to accentuate the fact that the movement’s clearly the wrong size for the case.

The IWC shown isn’t too bad, but an ETA 2896 (big date) may’ve looked better.

This watch reminds me of old period movies where everybody walks around with 60's hair and make-up. Slapping a 40's inspired dial on a modern automatic watch with a date just looks wrong, much like Patek's 5296.

Close, but the date would bother me after the honeymoon has passed. I have to say it looks better than the standard MC model, which has a bland dial, like most entry level JLC dress watches.

I think it is an absolutely great looking watch at a very good price. I especially like it with the calf strap they put on at Hodinkee for the "A week on the wrist".
Did you actually get it Maxy? Or do you just like it :)

I also like the chronograph version but I am a little sad they didnt give it a sapphire caseback.

No sir, don't own it yet. This thread was right after SIHH in January though I still plan to get this watch sometime down the road.
