After reading this and the other loafer thread, I have spent hours researching Shell Cordovan Loafers...I am ready to order a pair of the Alden 986 in color 8. Tough decision between this and black, but I have many more black pairs and only a couple in this color.
One question, looking at the matching belt #MB5818. Generally does the belt color match the shoes fairly well? I assume some of you with the shoes have tried Alden's belts as well.

It should be pretty close, and even if its off just a bit it won't matter. Belt and shoes don't have to be a perfect match. Besides as they age there's a greater chance the shoes will fade into a slightly different shade anyway.

Thank you. I am not that OCD...almost though... I guess I should have asked more about the quality. Is the quality of the shell belt worth the additional cost?

Just so you are aware most shell belts are stitched from two to three separate pieces of shell. It doesn't make the belt look any worse, it's just due to the nature of where the shell comes from. The horses ass. The ass just isn't long enough to end up with one piece for a belt.

Much appreciated Dan. Thank you for taking the time to help.

By the way, your shoe collection is outstanding. You have great taste.
Most of my current lineup is RL Polo. I found out on this forum just the other day that some of them are produced by Crockett and Jones and other well known makers. I think you may have been the one to provide that information. Been wearing RL for many years. Very well made shoes.

I never really studied up on the Shell Cordovan leather for shoes before I saw this thread, somehow that eluded me all these years. I have some straps that are Shell Cordovan and I love them. Just a whole different look and feel than other leathers.

Gave me something new to research and learn about. Enjoyable thread and experience. Look forward to my new loafers and belt.

No problem, any time and thanks. Actually Crockett and Jones were my gateway into English shoemakers. Kind of hard to call them a gateway to anything given how good they are, but it certainly was my initial look at how good shoes could really be. This was about the same time I started getting back into calf as well. Cordovan is neat but a great pair of well finished calf can be even more aesthetically pleasing.

So I got lucky and the dealer "Brick and Mortar" in Seattle has my size in the 986 in stock, but tracking down the matching belt is proving to be a challenge. Anybody have any suggestions? She called the factory and no word on when more belts might be available. Rancourt has color 8 belts in stock....might have to just use the oxblood/cordovan belts I have until I can order the Alden.

If your looking for Alden belts you may have to look around a bit I know I had too when I purchased the one Alden shell belt I purchased. I have however purchased some other shell belts from other shoemakers as well and these generally will work also. Sherman Brothers is where I purchased the one Alden shell belt I own all other retailers where out of stock at the time. Epaulet in New York will sell Carmina shell belts from time to time. Carmina may even sell these on their website. I would have no qualms about ordering from them. Rancourt sells all colors of shell belts and generally these can be purchased at any time. I do not own any shell belts from Rancourt. I'm almost certain that Allen Edmonds sells shell belts also.

Thanks guys. Yes they are hard to come by, I looked all over the web. I will make do with something else until they make them again. Nice that I was able to find a store in Seattle and start a relationship with them. I will work with them on getting the belt. Thanks for all the help. LOL, the shoes will be here on Friday:)
