I bought SMG a few weeks ago.

Its a solid company that clearly has a platform in the industry.

Hoping for big things.

yeah, I don't disagree.

I have got one speculative stock. CARA is the one for me. It appears that either way, they are actually doing some pretty necessary things.

either, it is not a large position. But for the cost of a used Sub, I have about 10% in profit so far.

Not a huge risk. And fun to watch.

Who ever bought CARA congrats. I'm out though at 16. Over 3x is good for me, that's a sweet ride since July, especially the last 30 days.

Killed it on cara. Thanks for the tip.

Thinking I'm going to stick around tho. I think their product is good. I believe they have a ton of growth potential.

Best of luck Seth..
I'm sure it'll keep going, if I was in my 30's I'd probably throw more at it.

I agree. I have nothing to add though. Please nobody take financial advice from me. I got 100% out of the market with my 403b about a year ago. All in fixed now. Oh well I can sleep at night.

I'm aggressive in my Roths though. Bullish on gold and REITS.

My cousin in law (74 yrs) put all his funds in an 7yr anunity at 10% almost 2 yrs ago, just living off his retirement. Said he's through with market worries because his brokers didn't listen to him, and they lost money for him ,,,, what offended him more than anything is that they got their fees when they structured his portfolio and declined to add his requested stocks (cousin's stocks ended up being the only money making stocks that could have saved the portfolio).

Now just wants to leave his kids and grandkids money to help them and go golfing without a sour stomach.

Like anything there are good and bad advisors, most are bad, indifferant, incompetant or think they are smarter than the market.

My model account over the last 5 years has done 18%, 5.5%, 13%, 22% and 11%

The S&P 500 has done 12, 2, 13, 32 and 16%..

But I find many advisors don't run money the way I do, there is NOTHING client owns that I don't own personally. If I buy, they get it, if I sell they get sold out of it.

....and I'm taking only about 65% of the risk of the S&P 500, so if it goes down 1% on any given day, I'm down 65 bps

I've done enough finra cases to know the average broker knows less than I do about investing, generally lives abover their means and is in debt. There are exceptions of course, many brokers are just looking for comics ion streams.

I work with a guy from ML. Great guy. Answers my calls at all hours of the day even when he is on vacation.

Endless patience. Family guy that makes his kids breakfast everyday. And he listens to what my goals are, and then implements them, even if he doesn't agree. He thinks I should be more aggressive as I'm only 42. But my goal is simply to keep it all secure while hopefully making a few points. I've seen too many people lose it all. I prefer to be conservative and sleep at night.

Most importantly I trust him.

I have some "fun" money in individual stocks. But 95% of it is managed.

For what it is worth. I am feeling very good about ADP.

I just purchased more. And it appears, based on a lot of research that they are due for an upcoming ride.

Any tips on investing for a newborn child? ROTH IRA, 529 plan? Looking into some options. I have a lump sum that i would like just to drop into something and let it marinate till he's older.

thanks in advance.

Can you start a Roth IRA for a child ? I don't think so. I think 529 is good if they go to school, if they don't I'm sure the money is federal taxable ? plus 10% penalties and perhaps state tax too. Double check.

I put a lot of money in Mcdonalds stock when she was born in 1991. Check it what it did from 1991 to 2010. I'd have to check but it split at least twice and those dividends are great to reinvest.
Kids get into stocks that they like and really follow it.

529. You can contribute 5 years at once (140k) for each child. I did this last year for both my kids and it worked out great.

The gains on a 529 would be taxable if used for non education purposes, but you still have your basis as that is after tax money.

Ok its pro bono time! Allow me to jump in here.... the correct answer is 529 plan!!! Use American Funds. I think you can do it without a broker as well. For a newborn who has 18 years until college, go with the following allocation- 25% AMCAP, 15% Europacific, 25% Balanced fund of America, 20% Income fund of America, and 15% Capital Income Builder. Tax free growth over the life of the acct when used for college. Congrats on the kiddo!!!

Bright Start 529 has allocation segments based on their age and aggressiveness, you don't need to pick. 0-6, 6-12, 12-18.
