Great news for the A-10 Wart Hog crowd !!

40 years old. Many 'Let's get rid of it' threats by the haters. It's going to be new and improved. I can't think of a better sound for the ground troops then when they hear the whinney turbo fan engines as it orbits above them at 75 meters and that nasty cannon on the nose lets lose.

Is it a fighter jet, not really at max speed of about 450mph. Is it expensive, nope under 20 million each. What a bargain for this incredible aircraft..

Let's look at the F-35 price estimates that vary
F-35A: $98 million
F-35B: $104 million
F-35C: $116 million

I hope they go through with the new improved A-10..NASTY ! Takes a beating but comes home. What a fitting name for this thing. Warthog.

Read the article if interested.

In action with cannon, listen to it.

Love the A-10!

Would often see them in the pattern at Peterson Air Force Base/Colorado Springs Airport.

Seemed like they loved to make a sharp turn on base to final, would get a great view.

My Brother graduated from the Air Force Academy and then flew A-10s for 8 years. Seeing one up close and watching it make a gun run will leave you speechless.

He flys 737s now.

The fate of the A-10 is followed very closely here in Tucson.

It's the A-10 Thunderbolt II. IIRC, they are all in the Guard and Reserve now. The active Air Force hates them with a capital H, and always has. They have tried to replace them for decades without success. The loiter time alone can't be matched by any other USAF platform, much less CAS effectiveness.

And... the F35 is a joke.

I saw A-10's in action (overhead) in Iraq. Impressive machines to say the least. It will be interesting to see what the brass does down the road to sustain this capability.

If they cost 20 mil 30 years ago they'll cost 300 mill today, and have issues up the wahzzoo. Defense procurement / Congress can't do anything properly today.

Find the best armored cropduster you can get, load it up, and give them to the Army and the Marines. Have the AF keep sending A10s for a depot level overhaul.

I think the price is current September 2015. I researched an article from 22 September 2015.

Why does AF hate them so much?

Great to see them staying, I alwYs loved their menacing looks and killer firepower. Thanks to all the folks in military that keep them in the air and on target.

Are you sure on the pricing? I heard the f-22 raptors cost close to a $1 billion per. Im surprised f-35 are only going to be in the 100 million dollar range per.

The A-10 is a great plane and I'm sure the troops love that close air support.

Not sleek, not fast, not the prototypical fighter. They've tried to kill it a number of times. The assorted supersonic fighter variants with supposed CAS capabilities were supposed to replace it, but never really provided real CAS capabilities.

The A-10 was built to kill Soviet tanks pouring into eastern Europe. It's loiter capabilities and ability to absorb ground fire damage were intended to keep it in a fight to the death with the red hordes. Once that threat disappeared the USAF wanted to go entirely to air superiority variants. The gulf wars have both kept the A-10 in the fight and demonstrated the USAF supersonic fighter doctrine is flawed.

The F-35, jack of all trades - master of none, acquisition has further demonstrated that the one size fits all super-fighter philosophy doesn't field combat ready aircraft on time or on budget. Now, the USAF has to find an effective CAS solution without breaking the bank. Sequestration is still a factor (hence the services scouring boneyards for parts), so upgrading the existing A-10 platform may be the only cost effective solution.

I always liked the tankbuster. The guard at Bradley field still use them. I had a model when I was a kid.

Sort of like land-rovers; ugly, but you can't kill 'em.

I flew along side these guys in Desert Storm, mostly on Skud-hunt missions. I have got to say, for turning everything on the ground in their crosshairs to a a non military capable pile of scrap metal there was no better bird! My hats off to these guys for sure.

Nothing else in inventory does as well at ground support.

The A 10 is my sons favorite plane. He fell in love with them during two tours in the middle east.

Seems they appear and bad guys stopped shooting at him. I wonder why...

EDIT: 100 million -200 million ++

Basically it's a weapon system with someone flying and working the computer. I'm courious the workload.

Here's a 3 minute F-35 video that's interesting. I think from 3 years ago. Beautiful plane

Transferring costs to the allies.

It's interesting to note that the allies can't have an F-22, but they can have all the F-35's they want.

I love CAS as well. Nothing brightens up your day quite like CAS checking in with you on the radio, especially when it's an A-10 pilot.

I was an Army guy, and in one particular deployment overseas I worked very closely with the Air Force. I understand that their core mission is not ground support, but none of the Air Force guys I ever met (aside from JTACs) had ever been in a situation where they needed ground support. If the Air Force zoomies hate the A-10 so much, and they do, give it to the Army and Marines.

When I did AGOS in the mid-80's the A-10 drivers were average guys. Focused, but just one of the guys. The high performance pilots couldn't be bothered with a bunch of lowly Army guys, we were an inconvenience in their lifestyle. Totally different attitude between the two communities of pilots.

This is why I thank God I am a Marine.

In Vietnam, there was no doubt that our fighter pilots were dedicated to the troops on the ground, just based on the way they flew.

When a jet flying at treetop level drops canisters of napalm, it makes a lasting impression.

But, then there are stories like this:
