Ruud Van Hospitalised

I was admitted to hospital yesterday with a knackered back.

Everything was great on Saturday, I bust through a plateau on the deadlift in the gym by launching 150kg (330lbs) with no lifting straps and no belt. Then on Sunday afternoon, I leant across my laundry rack to lift a pair of my Alan's, all 5grams (0.2oz) of them and boom, something went bang in my back. Boy, did I scream! I did the usual of icing it and immobilising myself as best I could. Yesterday, I could hardly move so I came to the hospital. I couldn't even get in and out of the taxi on my own.

The walk-in doctor sent me straight to A&E where I was pumped full of pain- killers and anti-inflammatories. I then had an MRI scan which revealed that I have a degenerated disc in my lower back and a torn vertebral muscle. The surgeon is a little concerned that my pain is not commensurate with what he can see from the scan.

At the moment I'm whizzing my spuds off on pain-killers and my mobility is going to be assessed by a physiotherapist tomorrow (that should be fun with me walking three feet above the ground ). Best case is that they manage it with pain-killers; if that doesn't work then I'll be given a nerve re-routeing shot directly into the spine. If that doesn't work then it's surgery, although that should be an absolute last resort.

I have my own room in the hospital but I'm in pain and bored. I should be thankful though because, as we've seen on the news recently, things could be worse. They could be very much worse.

Get well.

I didn't appreciate how incapacitating a back injury could be until I had one. I also did it deadlifting. At least that is what first made me realize something was not quite right. I was going for a PR and got the weight up, at the top I let it go. It felt like someone stuck a cattle prod in my back as soon as it unweighted. My wife had to put my socks on me for two weeks. I was a mess. Now a couple years later and only PT I'm about 98%. If I sit too long it bothers me. I'm afraid to lift weights, which I really should be doing. Now I run and play tennis.

Good luck. Avoid surgery if you can.

Sorry to hear Ruud. Best wishes in your recovery. I've injured my back previously, so I know how debilitating it can be.

Tell you what Paul, if you're in the area and you want some of these pain killers, I'll see you on the ceiling. I don't know if you miss flying from your military service but these cant be far off

The surgeon has advised me never to deadlift again and to take up swimming instead. Like that's gonna happen! I really do think I'm gonna have to lower the weight though, 330lb is a lot of metal for someone who weighs 187lb.

I know what you mean about the cattle prod. When I leant across my laundry rack it was like someone stuck a hot poker in my spine. I'm sure the whole of SE Asia heard me scream.

I won't go for surgery unless someone sticks an unmentionable to my head. Surgeon did say it would be a last resort

I'm looking forward to next Thursday, Cru

Many thanks for the kind words and well wishes, guys.

The pain I can live with (thanks to the drugs) but the boredom is killing me. If I'd had any inkling that they'd keep me in, I'd have brought my iPad and MacBook. My only options are to either suck it up or call my secretary in, give her my house keys and ask her to go get my iPad and MacBook.

Really glad I have my phone to access TRF so you guys can keep me company

I too have done something similar. Trying to one up one of my friends at the gym by trying to curl a straight bar with too much weight (when I was about 20). Super stupid. Couldn't get in/out of my bed/car/chair for over two full weeks. Two more weeks I could finally sleep through the night. It was the only thing that truly 'scared' me in the 20's. To this day, I'm religious with my form whenever lifting. Truly understand your pain, all I can tell you is time/patience is what your going to need.

Good luck getting healed up!!!

My wife just had a spinal injection for some low back (near her pelvis) degenerative disk issues. Multiple impacted discs. She said it has been "life changing" and I agree. She has virtually no pain and is completely mobile again.

Not that she was doing dead lifts, but it has her walking and enjoying exercise again. Her injury was a result of a fall during a cross fit session where she landed square on her tailbone.

No worries, the "is it safe" threads will keep you entertained for a while!!

Sorry to hear Paul. I have been there, and it does get better.

I cannot deadlift, and haven't since a rodeo injury about 15 years ago. There are alternatives to work those muscles. I recommend you comply with your physician, as later you will regret being headstrong now.

I don't know why a guy with a fat bike needs to be deadlifting anyway. Maybe had you gone with the resistance parachute with your fat bike you wouldn't have needed 150 kg of steel hanging off you to work up your legs.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery. PT will suck, but the effort invested there gets you back in the game sooner.

So sorry to hear Paul, back pain can be absolutely horrible. I've had it to the point that I've gone to the hospital but have never been admitted. I now go to a chiropractor every 6 weeks and have been doing that for years.
About 10 years ago I was also diagnosed with a degenerative disc, pain to the point that I was unable to do anything including going up stairs, I'd crawl up them on my hands and knees.
The pain eventually went away but I still battle from time to time with the back pain.
Get well sir, I hate to say it but your days of pushing heavy weight in the gym might be a thing of the past.

I hope you have a speedy recovery.

I can relate to this all too well. Back pain is really terrible.

I've had two epidurals in my spine, back about four years ago. I work out everyday still, but at the time I had to take near to a year off. During the worst if it, I spent weeks crawling to and from the bathroom.

Rest, sleep, drink lots of water. And try not to move.

Best of luck to you.

I have had two back surgeries; one of which included spinal fusion so I now have two rods and six screws in my back so I feel your pain. The good news is with patience, rest and following Doctor's (and physical Therapist's) orders I'm 100%. 100% in that I do everything I used to do. I blame age for not doing it as well! I even do dead lifts although that part might not be keeping with their orders. I know it sucks now but there is light at the end of the tunnel. Also I find its better to go easy on the pain killers. With them you may do too much. Without them you know exactly when enough is enough. Good luck, stay positive.

So sorry to hear about your back. I've suffered from back pain for quite a number of years now. I have a couple of degenerated disc as well as a curvature of the spine. The first time I saw my X-Ray's, I almost had a heart attack.

Unfortunately, once you injure your back, it's tough to make a full recovery.

As far as the pain, some of it you learn to live with and some of it requires medication. You also learn fast what you can and what you can't do with regards to your back.

I'm in the middle of a move right now and just the bending and the lifting of boxes, brings the pain right back.

Rest and no lifting for a while should do the trick. I never, although it was offered, considered surgery. I'd go back on full blown pain med's before that. Oh, and by the way, watch those pain med's. They can sneak up on you real quick and before you know it, you can't live without them. Don't ask me how I know. It wasn't easy to stop taking them. Now I get by on over the counter stuff.

Take it easy for now, rest up and listen to the doctors. Maybe a little therapy and you should be go to go again.

Wishing you a very speedy and hopefully a full recovery.

Hi Paul, all the best for treatment and recovery.
I think we often ask more of our body than it is capable of delivering.
By 60 just about every male I know is carrying some sort of injury related to sport, exercise or lifestyle.
None of the above is worth even an hour of severe pain, and never permanent pain.
There is always something else we can do to amuse ourselves.
Cheers.
