Oh that sucks man, I know a stuff or two about back problems, haven't been hospitalized for them though but I did have severe pains for up to 6 months because of this, couldn't even sit down because of the excruciating pain, and also have been in hospital for 20 days in terrible pain following a bike accident, so I really get what you are experiencing, I know how horrible it is.

I wish you a quick recovery and hope you get out of there as fast as possible, and stop lifting such crazy weights please, 150kg is just insane IMO

Paul, very sorry to hear of your pain. Been there, done that but mine was lifting my then two year old daughter (now 19) while bent at the waist. Heard the audible crack, and went to my knees. Three blown disc and several months of PT (which sucks) and returned to a somewhat normal life. I did have to stop running at my ortho's request. He frightened me when he said "keep running and I'll see you in the OR" Now even when I have to pick up something off of the floor I go to my knees first.
Get well, and easy with the pain meds, they creep up quick.....

Back trouble is grim, I feel sorry for you. My advise though is think seriously about starting the deadlifting again, it has ruined many a back. If you absolutely must continue may I suggest;
halving that weight and doing a few more reps and also use a 'shrug bar', it will allow you to start with your hands outside your shins instead of in front and thus your hands will rise straight up as opposed to passing the overhang of your knees. A safer mechanical position for your back. Good luck and get well soon.

Thank you all again for your kind words, guys

Good news is that I'm being kicked out tomorrow after two more sessions of rehab. I've had one today and will have one more in a couple of hours.

I've been given a back brace to wear when walking and sitting for extended periods which seems to help. However, I'm now politely refusing the pain drugs until bed time only; thing is, I want to know what's REALLY going on with my back. My fear is that if the torn muscle and worn disc are pharmaceutically numbed too much then I run a real risk of exacerbating the issue. Last night the physio asked me not to take the drugs before this morning's rehab so she could get an idea of how good or bad things were and I haven't felt too much need to take any since.

I hope to be back in the office middle of next week but I won't be going out on survey for about a month.

Bernie, that's great advice. My gym recently acquired a trap bar so if I ever return to the deadlift then I will use that in future with half the weight. I might even use a couple of blocks so that I can start the lift about six inches or so higher up. Should put even less strain on my back. I'll see what happens in a few months though, I ain't getting any younger

Ajas, I do pull-ups and weighted dips anyway

Steve, my room overlooks Golden Landmark so I'm looking out for you

Thank you all again

Good morning Paul, forgot to mention the blocks, it's a great help, it's what I have to do after twenty three years of back trouble. The pull ups and also pull downs will help decompress slightly. It's hard but take it easy and slowly :-)

Lessons learned, my friend. I'll get back into it but I really do need to back off at my age and with injuries I've had. If injuries were an Olympic sport, I'd be a gold medalist every time

It's the best exercise out there, Tony. Like the squat though, lethal if performed incorrectly or with too much weight
