Officer killed in KCK

This incident also appears to be an ambush.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. Update-- 4:15 p.m.: Kansas City, Kan. Police Chief Terry Zeigler identified the officer killed in Tuesday afternoon shooting as Captain Robert "Dave" Melton. Ziegler says Melton was fatally shot following a response to a drive-by shooting. Police say Melton was alone when he tried to pull the car over.

Ziegler says Melton responded to the call just as a chase ended and the suspects jumped out of the car, firing on him.

Police have one suspect in custody and have detained two other people who may be connected to the shooting. Police say they are still looking for one more suspect.

Dr. James Howard, a trauma surgeon at the University of Kansas Medical Center says the hospital received notification of the officer-involved shooting at about 2:15 p.m. Melton arrived at about 2:22 p.m. and did not have a pulse. Howard says doctors pronounced Melton's death at 2:55 p.m.

KCTV-5 reports Melton's death comes just two months after the death of KCK police detective Brad Lancaster. Lancaster was shot and killed May 9 near the Kansas Speedway.

Sadly I think these recent ambushes of officers will only increase. The public needs to watch officers backs please.

I'm not sure what's happening to the world?

Very scary and there seems to be an awful news story every day at the moment.

Our thought's a prayers go out to 'Daves' family at this difficult time.
