I love the RTM 84. fantastic ski!

BTW, super cute assistant!

I am skiing Grand Targhee and Jackson Hole over the Christmas break. I am so pumped that I can not stand it.

Which resort is that, Joey?

I was a part time-time ski-instructor back when, I cannot wait for the season to open, which is tough here in the mid-Atlantic region. I'll be skiing for New Years with the family.

It's Detroit Mountain in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. It reopened after being closed for 12 years after a community fund-raising effort produced almost nine million dollars to rebuild it from scratch. We put another 2.5 million dollars into additions and improvements this summer.

Just got 10 inches of snow this week, and the temps are staying nice and low, so snow-making is going full tilt for a Saturday opener. Not much vertical, but what we lack in vert, we make up for in cold!

Clive, I'm amazed at the lack of snow there. It's a common issue for many mountain resorts here in the US too. Several haven't opened yet.

We opened the hill this morning. 17 degrees F below zero. These guys were like kids on Christmas morning. It's so good to be back on the snow again!

Great photos, Roger. A picture postcard day.

It snowed overnight and continued to snow all day today, which is wonderful considering the poor seasonal snowfall we had the past two winters.

Half of today's crew.

My assistant in charge of the Young Adult Program and I. We are very lucky in that we have a large contingent of young volunteers in our program. Many volunteer organizations around this area are rightly worried about the graying of the volunteer membership.

Nice. My wife and I were talking on the way home. We hope to retire in about 10 years and if we are still skiing then (barring health issues) we want to volunteer as mtn hosts or ski patrol.

Our snow started out slow before Thanksgiving - barely opened with 1 run the day after, but mother nature has finally started contributing with a vengeance - 20" in the last 3 days, 32 in the last week and we are supposed to see a lot more next week too.

Thanks. Certainly skiing is much more enjoyable than sitting in an ER at 3 AM on Christmas Eve, but there is something about working with a passionate, positive group of volunteers who have trained for over 200 hours to become patrollers that is incredibly fulfilling. I've never spent a moment in this job wishing I was doing something else.

And BTW, even working out all year doesn't prepare one for the stiffness that comes after Day 2 of skiing the new season! Ouch!

Ok, certainly don't want to hijack the thread but seems I have a captive audience of professional skiers can I please ask some advice?

I've never been skiing in my life but my wife has been a few times.

My question is, what is the earliest a child could begin skiing?

My brother in law has invited us to go skiing with them in either Japan or Canada in January 2018 but my son will only be 2.5 years old.

To those who live and breathe skiing can you please offer us some advice from your own experiences? (My gut is telling me it's too young).

Thank you.

James.

Hi James. At our managers meeting this morning, I asked our head instructor your question. She felt that if the child had some formal instruction, you could start you son now at 2.5 years of age. If you were going to just tie a lanyard around their waist and "pizza" down the hill, she suggested 3.5 to 4 years old.

A PSIA instructor can make the time fun and valuable, and I'd highly encourage a formal session or two with your son. I love seeing tiny tots skiing fearlessly down the hill.

I love seeing the little ones on the hill. When they fall, it's about six inches to the ground, and they almost bounce back up. Enjoy!

Mrs. Chitwood took the 100-hour Outdoor Emergency Care course this fall and is now a certified patroller. It's really nice to spend the days on the hill together.

Taking a break from the cold by the fireplace. Wind chills tomorrow in the -45 degree F range.

We're off to a good start here in the east as well. I ski Blue Mountain and Ellicottville mostly as they are the closest "hills". The skiing here is mostly hard packed and can be icy at times.

We try to make it out to Whistler once a year. I'm hoping to take the family to Park City UT this year if time permits!

Thanks for being a ski patroller!

I was helped down the mountain once by the ski patrol after tearing my peroneal tendon. I certainly appreciate guys and girls like you that spend their time keeping the mountain safe!

Thanks! My daughter got a ride down the hill in a ski patrol toboggan with a tib-fib fracture, and Mrs. Chitwood rode down after falling and tearing a cartilage in her knee.

Nice Brian! Holiday Valley is my home turf as I'm about an hour away in Buffalo

Haven't made my first run of the year yet. Soon

27 degrees F below zero this morning with a wind chill of -45, but the week's high temps will be in the 20s. Looking forward to some nice, moderate temperatures.

Holiday Valley is where I ski also! Had a ride down in the toboggan several years when I tore my ACL. Thanks for all the ski patrol does!
