I bought a Vostok Amphibia because I saw Bill Murray wearing one in The Life Aquatic and I thought it was a cool looking watch.

I don't feel like an adult man who models his life after Steve Zissou (Murray's character in the film) just because I bought that watch. Seeing that watch in the movie just brought it into my consciousness.

Not sure why it's unrealistic to think the Bond films and books had some impact. Even though at the time Dr. No came out the Sub probably said more about James Bond than vice versa, over time I don't think the association hurt Rolex or the Sub any.

Look what Goldfinger did to elevate the DB5 to icon status.

I think most people only know Omega in correlation with 007. I think the Rolex sub would still be iconic without home because of just the brand name itself.

Even though I read the then-popular, and now largely forgotten, John O'Hara novels that talked about protagonists, usually aspiring lawyers in white shoe firms, owning Pateks or VCs. But Rolex stuck with me.

In college (1968) I met a student from a wealthy family whose father gave him a Rolex, maybe a Sub, I don't recall. So I saw one up close. A couple years later I bought a TT DJ.

So, yes, Bond (actually Ian Fleming's novels) played a huge part in my fondness for Rolex.

Great story!
