The Tridor

Hi, folks. I'm new to the forum and wanted to post a few shots of my Tridor. It's an 18039bic SQ from around 1985-86. It's a bit of a rare one as its got a WG bezel and rhodium roman dial, all authorized by Rolex. Apparently, most Tridors came with a YG bezel as stock, but the option of a WG bezel was offered. Seems that not a lot of folks took advantage of that option. I think the WG bezel and rhodium dial tones it down a lot and I find it to be quite attractive. What do you think?

Regards.

Welcome I always loved the Tridor since it was introduced years ago Your's is very nice but I prefer the yellow gold bezel and crown as I'm partial to the full TT look.

WOW!!

Yes, that would be extremely rare as all TRIDORs came original with only YG bezels. Never seen one with a WG bezel.

Sadly, the TRIDORs were phased away and didn't last too long after their introduction in the mid-80s.

A great looking watch nevertheless!!

A TRIDOR is a just a normal Day-Date with an added twist.

The ORIGINAL TRIDOR comes with a YG bezel but a WG case.

The bracelet is President, but is made up of 3 gold colours - pink, yellow and white, all beautifully merged to form a very fascinating bracelet.

Not sure why this model never caught on with the general public and was, sadly and eventually phased out by Rolex.

If you can find one at a good price, then snap it up; but resale on these models did suck big time.

Tridors were the unloved stepchild of the DD group. They were the most expensive of the bunch as the cost was high to manufacture the blend of white gold, yellow gold and rose gold in the center links. Typically, they were a special order item. A lot of people thought they looked too much like a TT DJ and so they weren't all that popular based on that fact and the additional expense. That logic eludes me since a WG DD or a Plat. DD can look like SS to the non-WIS, yet they are still made and sold. The Tridor was discontinued in or about 2002. As noted in my initial post, the Tridor came with a YG bezel, but a WG bezel was available as an option (which is a little-known fact).

The story behind my Tridor is interesting. An old girlfriend of mine had been shopping for a lightly used Platinum DD for years without success. Finally, in 1994 she was at an AD who said he could get her a NOS Tridor (with an 8900 serial # circa 1985-86) for around $14K (retail then was about $20,400) ... the watch had been sitting in a vault at Rolex Geneva and had a YG bezel and white dial. She said she'd take it since she wanted a nice DD, but insisted on the WG bezel and rhodium roman dial. She got it and wore it for a while. Then, when we hooked up, I fell in love with the watch ... at that point, she had sourced a lightly used Platinum DD for a good price. So, I bought the Tridor from her at a discount (all boxes and papers included) and she then bought the Plat. by adding some $$ to what I paid for the Tridor. I don't know what happened to her, but I sure know how well the Tridor is doing.

Regards.

JJ - A Tridor with a WG bezel is an "original" since that was an authorized option offered by Rolex. It came stock with a YG bezel, but both are "originals."

interesting piece. kinda like it

imo - the reason why it didnt last long/catch public eye is probably because of the "unique" looking of the bracelet.
