March last year the wife and I went to Benjamin on 41St with some local friends. Service was great, food was great too but the atmosphere on Peter Luger was much better IMO. Not sure the hour we spent drinking there had something to do with it lol.

Try the Notify Me function on their online reservation site or the RESY app. You can set it up for multiple days and designate the time frame (e.g. 6:30-9:30pm). If one opens up you’ll get an email or a notification via the app. But you have to respond quickly before someone else gets it. I’ve had luck using it on some other popular restaurants.

As others have said Luger’s opens reservations 6 weeks out.

https://apps.apple.com/us/app/resy/id866163372

Good luck!

Do you have a Gold Amex or Platinum? Chase Saphire? The concierge service may be able to get you a reservation.

I do. I’ll give that a try. Good suggestion.
(Although, since they don’t take credit cards not sure that AMEX or Chase would have any leverage.)

In previous years I’ve also tried, well ahead of time, to see if my hotel (Ritz Central Park) concierge could get us in. “No way” was the response along with “we can get you in most other places, just not there”.

another recommendation for keen's--similar type of place/ambiance, better food, and easier to get a table.

Been there and it was very good.
We try to go to a new steakhouse every year.
I’m leaning to going to Luger’s and “making friends” with the host.

Luger's is ok. I actually like their burger a lot. It's only served during lunch hours. Very tatsty with a good meat to bun ratio. Plenty of steakhouses here to choose from if you can't get in. Delmonico's in FIDI has the same old school ambiance and a steak cut named after them.

I haven't been to Lugers in Brooklyn for years. When we used to go with customers, it was amazing. Loved everything about it. The guy that would take us still has his original Peter Luger's credit card!

I can’t say Lugers is the best steak I’ve ever had. It’s about the experience also. For me it’s a must do while in NYC.

Perfectly said. Maybe 20 years ago you could consider it a top steakhouse, but there is some serious competition now. The steaks are very good, but not the best I’ve ever had.

Where the restaurant shines is the experience. I have to say, I’ve never experienced a restaurant like Luger before. When I went, there was a loudmouth guy drinking and joking with everybody by the entrance. I thought “hey, this guy is pretty funny”. Turns out he was the host lol.

I also remember as my party was walking to our table, we got stuck because one of the diners was sitting with his chair super far from the table. My waiter said something along the lines of “Oh that’s ok, let’s just walk around this guy who is blocking us”. Total smartass and wise guy. I loved it. It was hilarious.

I felt like I was eating at a restaurant in the 60s. Great experience.

Peter Luger NYC

I so much enjoy the Peter Luger nyc. I and my husband make reservations every Friday and Saturday night for the past 8 years not missing the days, just for both of us alone.
Guess what!!!
We've got their cards and lot of discounts on what we purchase.

I understand the desire to cross it off your bucket list, but it's just a steakhouse. go for lunch

As others have said, it’s about the experience. I doubt that a lunch would give me the same experience as dinner, but it’s a good thought.

If you really want to eat dinner there on a weekend night, I don't think you'll have too much trouble getting seated.

1) You could have someone else call who's booked with them before. Hotel concierge, AMEX concierge, or anyone else who makes reservations there often.

2) Call yourself as soon as they open for the day. Could have been a last minute cancellation.

3) Show up, graciously ask if any tables are available. and give the maitre d'hotel a 50 or 100 dollar bill. Roll it up so it looks less obvious. Most likely you'll get seated within 10 minutes.

Forget Luger's . As far as the other places mentioned they are in fact very good . As a native NY'er we have been to almost all of them. The only steak house we go to now is Wolgangs at 33rd st and Park avenue. We have never been disappointed it is consistently good. If someone in your party is not a steak eater the other food fish etc is also very good

For steak and steak alone, Lugers cannot be beat. I have been to every steakhouse imaginable and I find Lugers steak to be the best. When it comes to ambiance and service you will certainly do better elsewhere, but their steak is the best, regardless of which location.

Also, their stuffed lobster is surprisingly delicious as well.
