Michael Kors Watches: Pure junk?

Hi folks,

My 17 year old is in high school and yesterday she told me she wants a $300 Michael Kors watch for Xmas, from Nordstrom. Many girls in her highschool are wearing them, so lots of peer pressure.

I have seen these watches and my impression of them is that MKors get these watches mass produced in china --- just plain old junk quartz watches and he gets them stamped with his log and then Noerstrom jacks up the price and people are buying them like there is no tomorrow.

So I told her all that and said that for $300 she is better of sticking with Seiko or CITIZEN, companies known for watchmaking.

Is my impression wrong about MK watches?

They are made by Fossil. Fossil also makes Michele, an even more expensive fashion line. It's good enough quality for that price range.

She could get the same look by buying a Fossil version of it for 1/3 the price, but bear in mind it's all about brand for her...if the cool kids have Kors she wants Kors.

You are right for the most part about MK watches but if that's what the others are wearing in school she wouldn't really care about Seiko or Citizen. It is more trying to fit in with the crowd with the accessory rather than watch appreciation.

They are junk but It's the fashion trend and she's trying to fit in. She probably would pick it over your Rolex!

It is her wish as a 17 year old. Yes, we look down upon the brand as an inexpensive Japanese Quartz movement inside a brand. The thing is her current wish is shaped by a growing desire to have the brand. Kors has done a good job then.

Just my 2¢, maybe get the Kors and get a nice looking pre-owned Rolex that's a tad more conservative (maybe an Oyster P.) and see what happens in 6 months...

I have seen movies with "I hate you dad".
$300 not hear those words from a daughter is priceless!

My sister-in law had us buy her a MK watch in Florida last month, and she's older than 17. They are junk, but IMHO quite stylish.

My daughter did try on my wife's midsize Yachtmaster and she was hooked .... she won't take it off .... So she asked my wife "mom, I want to wear that to highschool" .... my wife said "I do not think so honey .... " and then she turned to me and said "dad, can I wear you DEEPSEA to school?" and I said "ofcourse honey" and she said with her mouth open "really dad??" and I said "yes, really .... after I am dead! HA HA HA !!!"

Yes, watchmaking/horlogy wise, Mkors is not even in the pic, but bling wise, they do a pretty good job ...

So I am teaching my daughter about quartz vs mechanical and the difderences and the benefits of each .... she seems quite interested in watches ... which is good...

You are right. I am little old fashioned type of a person. I do not believe in handing over to my kids the best there is. I supply them enough to get their job done and some but not get extravagant about it. If she wants a Rolex, she needs to get it once she has a job and finished college and has her basic needs taken care of.
She wants a fancy car because of her driver's license she is about to get, I told her you will be driving our 10yr old honda accord. Be thankful at least that you are getting a car. She wanted a mini cooper. I can easily afford to give it to her, but it is a matter of principle. Make use of what we have in our family and keep your dreams as an incentive to complete college --- Rolex, cars, house, it will all come in due time once she has matured enough and is on her own.

I understand these teenage impluses ... I had them too but I was thankful to my parents to whtever they could provide and I knew my time would come if I had a good carrer
andworked hard and saved my pennies....so I want her to experience that.

I'd vote to get her the MK she wants. If it is something that the others at school are wearing then getting her something that would make her stand "outside" of that circle will only invite conflict. She may end up not wearing the "better" watch simply because it sets her apart from her friends at school.

It is not junk. It is not high quality either. It is reliable and a fashion statement for the ladies. If your daughter likes it, I would get her one.

I'm not impressed by the quality of MK watches - BUT I'm sure my parents felt the same way about some things I purchased when I was 17 (anyone remember parachute pants?).

It's not an easy decision. If you choose to buy the watch then are you setting her up to make mindless purchases in the future? If you choose not to buy the watch and teach her about automatic/quartz etc will she feel the need to tell her friends that they are making poor decisions?

I say do both - buy her the watch AND teach her about quality. That way when it falls apart she knows why.

My mother has a Michael Kors Rose "Gold" Chrono. She rarely wears it, and the finish has faded incredibly. She says to my dad sometimes, how come your Rolex's gold doesn't fade?

Pfft. Women.

But in all seriousness, I don't think $300 is worth it. Buy her a rose gold Invicta chrono? They're pretty cheap and good looking!

x2 If that's what she wants.

Fossil makes pretty much every fashion watch you see in the cases at Nordstrom. My wife is into these fashion watches and has several Micheles and a MK. The Michele offerings are definitely higher quality, but also higher priced. MK would be in the middle price and quality-wise.

We've even had to send my wife's MK in because a spring bar sheared off when I accidentally (no, it wasn't a WIS sabotage or anything) knocked it off the dresser. They repaired it under warranty, and even changed the battery while it was there.

I can only agree, quartz watches aren't necessarily junk and beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I know I'd rather buy somebody what he/she wants than something that I personally prefer.

Make sure you do not buy it for full retail.

I have seen them as much as half off on many occasions.

as for quality. Well its a cheap quartz with a brand name nothing more to say really :)
