16202 for 15202 owners

My sales contact told me if you already have a 15202 registered you won't be priotizied for a 16202 unless you have consistently purchased from AP every year. Is that a thing?

I would think anyone able to buy a 16202 would be purchasing watches on a somewhat regular basis. As for the reprioritization of 15202 owners, it also makes sense on a like for like watch, but I would guess they might be able to buy something different in precious metal if their 15202 is in steel. Need to also consider the PM pieces are made if far fewer quantities though.

Anyway, someone not buying watches on a regular basis who already has a 15202? It's probably quite a bit more difficult to be allocated the new model.

Agree, having or not having "consistently purchased from AP every year" is probably the operative part here. Having a 15202 bought in the olden days is not going to do much. If AP ever get's their CPO program off the ground, that might be an interesting angle for moving from 15202 to 16202 (with the expectation that the 15202 will be valued < MSRP).

I think it's now well documented that AP tracks every owners history and pace before deciding which piece they will allocate to who. For some collectors who don't buy often, it's quite disappointing. I still remember walking in to try everything and can decide between a 15400 and 15202. Now you just have to buy enough to stay in their game.

AP is doing an infinitely superior job of tracking their customer's ownership history and rewarding them vs Patek and Rolex. AP actually seems to care about real enthusiasts, but even then you still have to play the game, albeit the "rules" are better defined.

That seems a pretty rational approach from a business POV. They might even figure that when the pendulum swings back, clients that buy watches year-in, year-out would be most likely to stick around.
