One of these days, I'll have to come up with a mosaic of all the co-branded air king photos I have.

I just saw my first AK in the wild today, on the wrist of a colleague. I was so dumbfounded, I interrupted his train of thought to inquire. Definitely not a WIS, but he was drawn to its simplicity when he bought it on a whim back in 2002 in Las Vegas. We congratulated each other on our good taste!

I just heard from my dealer today that the Airking dial (with the name on it) has been retired and will be no more.

It was retired at the end of last year. Sadly the name is dead but the reference still lives

As a young man I always had an appreciation for finer things. However, the fact that I came from very humble means meant that they were to items to be admired, but were to be admired from afar. Atop that list was Rolex. I have always appreciated the elegance and craftsmanship of these fine timepieces and told myself that if ever in a position to do so, I would purchase one.

For my 41st birthday this September I treated myself to a blue, Air King. After a great deal of research, I decided that the Air King was the correct model for me. Though no longer in the industry, my background is in aviation so the provenance if this model struck a chord with me. I wanted something understated, but classic and elegant that doesn't enter the room five minutes before I do.

With all of the comments that exist about the size, I at first had some concerns, but they faded the minute I put it on. I am a larger gent at 6'3" and 250+lbs and despite the current trend of huge watches, the size is perfect for my taste. I will let others sport the obnoxiously large time pieces that more closely resemble wall clock. I will enjoy this work of art for its elegance and simplicity.

^^^ I couldn't agree more with you as to the size. It does surprise me though, that the watch looks so at home on your wrist. You are taller than me by 7" and outweigh me by 100#. Enjoy and wear it in good health!

I think you'll find extreme late 1960s or 1970s on those. At least the dial anyway

Cosmoliu,

Serial Number 3380xxx.

"Bob's Watchs" and "watchfinder.co.uk" put it at 1971.
"http://sweepinghand.co.uk" puts it at 1972.
"Qualitytyme.net" puts it at 1973.

So... somewhere 'roun' there. ;)

Thanks,
Hilo

PS: I've enjoyed the few other posts with Linen/Tapestry dials.

ANYONE ELSE OUT THERE WITH LINEN DIALS?

I love my 14000M black dial Air King. The first Rolex I bought. Pure simplicity and understated, unlike the 116710LN I bought, but that serves a purpose as a time-zone watch and I love it. My Dad recently gave me his 16233 Datejust and it was the first Rolex he bought. I was an 18 year old kid back then (it was 1990 when he bought it) and I thought it was cool as f**k. This is such a great forum :-)

New Air King owner

I love the look and, personally, I think the size is a bit more formal than the sportier subs, etc. It is the everyday watch for me
