For the GMT function buy the Polar Explorer II.
For the "true Rolex" buy the Sub-C.
I own both and I'm happy.

I respectfully disagree with this. As far as the GMT function goes, the GMTM2 is a more powerful tool than the Exp II. And as for "true" Rolex, the GMT is right there with the Sub in terms of the richness of its history, longevity, and heritage.

Bottom line is, get what you want!

For me personally, I prefer the sub over GMT. but the older LV would top them all

Which one is thicker in case? Do they use the same case? The same clasp? What other differences in physical aspect? Thank you.

The cases themselves are pretty much the same, but the caseback on the GMT is a lower profile and the crystal is a hair thicker on the sub. The clasp is shorter on the GMT but it's a similar design. The Sub has the glidelock where the GMT has a simple unfolding extension. What part of Manila are you from? I just sold a new Yellow Sky Dweller to a guy in Manila.

I too am in the same dilemma for my personal collection. I have a 116613 TT Sub-C already, but can't decide if I want the GMT-C or black SS Sub-C. I can get either of these for under $7K new so it makes it that much harder.

I have them both but I wear the GMT II ceramic all the time. I was faced with the same but find the use of the GMT more practical. Sub, GMT same , same :)

This thread is awesome - there is no correct answer, it's what works for you.

I am leaning to the Sub as my 1st Rolex.

More bang for the buck with the GMT2 if you ask me. Especially for the average desk divers.

New to the forum - how have used prices fared on a % basis for the Sub -v-GMT

Resale is strong on both, especially in stainless. AD discounts, if any, on new are also similar.

Thanks very much, now I need to look around for a friendly, accommodative AD.

All things considered resale may favor the Sub by a tad but certainly not enough for it to be a consideration for most people. The GMT is very, very popular. You won't get stuck with it, that's for sure.

It's easy enough to check this for yourself. Just research the for sale offerings here and you will see what kind of discounts are offered on these two models. I think you will find they are pretty close (The GMT retails for $100 less than the SubC, btw). It's probably best to look at prices for new since condition doesn't become part of the equation. I think the relative values in the used market are probably similar to new.

Some will say forget about resale; get the watch you want. But I understand that perhaps you may buy and sell watches or consider resale value in justifying the purchase. But this is not a problem with either of these watches really. Both the Sub and GMT can find a home fairly easy if you need to get it out of your inventory.

choice depends a bit on your lifestyle / requirements:

pro Sub: the timing function of the rotatable bezel might be practical in sports, for timing meetings, cooking etc.

pro GMT II C: it offers more functions for travellers, either indicating
  • hometime and date, second timezone, UTC, or
  • hometime and date, UTC, solar compass (via turning the bezel to the position which is closest to indicating the astronomic time of your location, for this you need to know your longitude)

Otherwise, many points are just a matter of taste:
  • the Sub looks larger due to its "emptier" bezel and wider lugs than the GMT II C
  • the adjustment of the clasp is finer, but at the expense of a rather longer clasp than the GMT
  • the PCL's of the GMT II C show wear rather more obviously than the brushed parts

I recommend to you to try both models in direct comparison and find out how they look and sit on your wrist (flat bottom of the GMT vs. more convex bottom of the Sub) and then decide. I went for the GMT II C a year ago and am still convinced to have made the best choice for me.

Good luck!

Jann
Can anyone confirm that the SubC indeed has wider lugs than the GMTIIC? I'm not exactly a fan of the wider lugs giving the new renditions a squarish look, so if the GMTIIC has less of that added lug width, then that would be a plus for me. Planning on getting either at the end of the month. Hope you guys could enlighten me with this one. Thank you!

Welcome to the forum. They both have 20mm lugs and are both in the 40mm supercase.

I think the Submariner is much better looking. Hate all the numbers on the bezel on the GMT, and the GMT has polished centre links :/ Submariner is the classic Rolex.
