I will let others sport the obnoxiously large time pieces that more closely resemble wall clock. I will enjoy this work of art for its elegance and simplicity.
An understated work of art in any dial configuration and superbly comfortable!

A classic 5500 Joe! On yours it looks like the quarter hour dial markers are slightly larger than the others. These nuances of the 5500 dials continue to fascinate me!

Good eye Rick. This is a very late 5500, 1985 serial confirmed by rolex. By the 80s the dials were all like this one. You just picked the color

Thanks Joe, scrolling up through the thread again I see a few others like this. I hadn't noticed this difference relative to the markers on the 1970 model I own, but from their genesis in the late 50's the 5500's have had quite a variety of dial markers!

Love this thread and enjoy reading it very much. I did not know that the air King was meant to replace oyster Royal for the British pilot. Will post picture of my Oyster Royal which I acquired recently. Cheers

The case back stamped 59. The blue second hand and dauphin hour minute hand are correct for that period

Your air king is nice. I love the 50s design and find them very attractive. Too bad most of the modern watches does not provide make me feel the same way as to those vintage beauties.

Post more pictures of your air king :)

This is mine now I've put Explorer hour and minute hands on but kept the Air King second hand as I prefer it to the Explorer second hand

Unfortunately, the new, non date Datejusts [Oyster Perpetuals] miss the mark in that the dials are from another planet - cannot get simple silver numbers; cannot get a simple black dial unless it's with PINK numbers. Obviously this new model was designed specifically for women.

The new 41mm Datejusts are just a little TOO big. They scream, 'look at me" and don't have that classic understated look.

Wishful thinking.

Here is an early 60's 5500 with the "No-Precision script" dial, dart hour markers, lance hands.

Thanks. Most of the time I'm in a long sleeve shirt at work and these 34 mm Oysters work very nicely with a cuff.

That's nice two tone air king, seldom see this combo and you are lucky to own it.

My air king 5500.

Something a little different. I picked up this nice SS 5500 with gold dial markers and hands and swapped out for a smooth gold bezel, gold crown, and added a two-tone oyster bracelet to match.

I have a 5501 with a fluted gold bezel and TT jubilee bracelet but don't see many TT oysters on these watches.

Cheers,
Rick

Hi Adam,
It's been modified sure enough as many of these old triangle top boxes are. The person I bought it from printed what is essentially an Air King cigarette card on acetate and fitted it to the bottom of the lid. It's also been relined.

Cheers,
Rick

I have several of these boxes with either white silk, green leather with an embossed trident on the upper lid, or varnished wood interiors that seem to be original. I have a couple others with what appears to be wood grained contact paper linings which I can not imagine are original. The exteriors all appear original (except for repairs to the leather on the hinge end on a couple). How have you seen them lined?
