Rolex Repair

I am brand new to this forum. I have a 15 year old Rolex. The stem fell out and the watch got waterlogged, rusted out and is dead. I almost fainted when Rolex on St. Clair gave me a quote for repair-we're talking thousands. I told them I could not afford it but they are not flexible. Now they only sell Rolex parts to a handful of dealers in Ontario. Not just anyone can purchase the parts. Does anyone know of n authorized Rolex dealer who might charge less for the labor? I have not taken it anywhere else for an estimate. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated as it has been sitting in a drawer for two years.

Welcome to the forum and sorry to hear about your mishap.

What model Rolex do you have?

In most cases like this it's not the labor but but the parts that are costly as you most likely need a new movement.

You probably need more advice than a forum can give you...

If the movement is toast, it's about 1,400 just for that, plus whatever else needs fixing..

You don't say what model it is. Some may well be worth the money to have them fixed..... Others will not be worth what you have to spend to get them back to good condition..

Without somebody actually taking assessment of the condition of the movement it can't be judged if it can even be salvaged..

Rolex Repair and Make

It is a Rolex lady O.P. DATEJUST, 18 kt. yellow gold
Quote:

New movement 1,800
Dial Hands 356
Crown, Tube 100
Crystal 195
Gold spring bar 50
Recondition Bracelet 5,250.00

Before tax 7,751.00

They told me the minimum would be to do the first three and the last three were recommended but optional.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

How the hell can they justify that price to recondition your own bracelet?

That's almost replacement price. I bet we hear from a fourm member who would be willing to look at it and maybe do as good a job as at place!

Hell, sell the band for scrap gold and use the money to fund the repair cost of the watch. Rolex should be ashamed asking 5k to to recondition your OWN bracelet...

No typo- over $5,000- recondition bracelet. Quote from Rolex Canada at Yonge/St Clair, Toronto! I have the quote right in front of me. All in all with tax - September 12, 2008- $8,758.83.

The solid gold bracelets are close to 10,000 dollars, so half that for "recondition" whatever that means may be a good deal. That is also the majority of your estimate..

The watch is probably worth 5 to 8 thousand if running and serviced, so why not pay for that part and enjoy it until it really needs a new bracelet..

See, I was right... Sell the bracelet for scrap and fund the service with the proceeds. Wear a leather band till you save up enough to get a new one.

Option 2, sell the watch and buy a nice Sub...They look great on a woman's wrist.

More reasonable watch repairs for Rolex

I have taken my watch to Mr. Y. Phung at Yonge & Erskine with great success. A fraction of the costs being quoted other places. http://www.yelp.ca/biz/y-phung-watch-repair-toronto

My friend has a high end watch and we both feel that very often the cost of the repair is based on 10% of the cost of the watch. Our theory seemed correct when my sister's all gold Rolex had the same problem as my gold/stainless - and she was quoted a much higher repair rate.
