Normal Dial or Water / Age Damage

I bought a 1982 Rolex Day-Date and it was a great deal at 5500 with an extra bark bracelet (sold quick for $1450). that left me in the watch with the boxes booklets and appraisel for $4050. But I have been searching for the same dial I have and I do remember seeing them a while back but I cant locate them now. I did have a shop (snakes, but still knowledgable) tell me that it was water damage. I was planning to get the crystal replaced and change out the bark bezel. any insight???

Start with a crystal, and servicing. See if everything looks, and works like it should. If the movement is in good shape and has no water damage, then invest in a dial. I'd put a new crystal on it to see if it looks better after that.

am planning on that. but have you ever seen a dial like this with the gold over the black. it is not rust it is gold. what the "shop" has suggested is that water entered and caused the black to fade...but it is not faded and the only thing i see is gold. did it fade to gold in a nice pretty design?

I think they call it GILT which means gold. Leave it alone if It's not damaged. The crystal is my first concern. The chipped edges could allow water in, and little glass crystals to enter the movement. Second is to secure the movement from any particles, or water damage.

I think your dial is just fine, and should have a little patina over the years. Some other guys will be along to give you some info, but I'd hold off on the dial. It's a nice watch that needs just a little TLC to be in great shape.

So you would just do the crystal and update the bezel, I was going to go with a plain fluited bezel although diamonds sound good, and a service and call it a day? It just kills me to think that it could be damage that caused it, it looks good but right is right.

.

Nice looking watch.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but that is not an authentic Rolex diamond dial.

.

Not a gut feeling or proportions Kyle, it's the position of the diamonds.

I learned something new myself. Sorry for thinking it was original. It looks o.k. still.

I agree, it looks good and most fake and aftermarket dials looks like this.

Hard to tell by the fuzzy pic's if it's a real dial with aftermarket diamonds or not.

How did it pass the appraisel with a fake dial if that is the case and why do most model 18078's have a similar dial with the diamonds in the same place.

Well comparing your dial with a legit dial, the diamonds on the real one are closer to the inside roman numeral ring. Maybe the person who appraised it took in consideration that the dial was aftermarket, lowering the value. Maybe I'm wrong, maybe Leo can correct me.

It also looks like there is a spot of lume on the one, that doesn't appear on this dial. But maybe it is the "fuzzy" crystal and difficult to tell across the Internet.

Ok, I'll never be a watch appraiser, but do like to follow along and learn.

No they don't and I don't know who appraised it for you but I'm willing to bet it wasn't Rolex.

I would think you could still have a watch appraised for insurance purposes or otherwise. Even if it wasn't 100% "authentic Rolex" it would still certainly have value.

ok, does anybody have any insight to the gold cracklike design on the dial? Is it water damage or did it come like this?

Also due to the position of the diamonds that would make this dial fake too?

Alligment

The diamonds on a DD are always alligned with the Day on the dial.

The diamond thus will be on a 90 degrees angle with the hour marker.

The diamonds would be at the position of the lume.

I spent a good 3 hours looking at watches and every late 70's early 80 DD i see has this diamond dial. here is a link, from the pictures it is the same. fake too? http://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/jwl/1592917064.html

not as worried about that i was wondering if i had damage but I did take bad pictures so maybe it is not visable in the OP.

The link you posted to CL is deleted but if it had the diamonds in the same position as yours, yes it's an aftermarket dial.

Never mind

Never mind, get another dial somewhere (sometimes real nice appear on VRF)

Also a bezel won't be that difficult, get it serviced and enjoy it.

Why on earth sell the original bracelet ?

Completely off topic, but what is VRF?
