When did the lug holes disappear on the Explorer?

No, I'm wondering about the Explorer.

The lug holes on the 14270 disappeared during the S-serial, ca 1994. Same time as they disappeared on the Datejust 162XX (same case).

So, there are not that many 14270 with lug holes since it was introduced in 1990. Also the first models had the "black out"-dial (with 3,6,9 painted in black rather than white). Those are expensive. I'd say there where only some three years of production of the 14270 with lug holes and the dial we all recognise.

I've been looking for a nice example, with original dial, but they are difficult to find.

Best,

A

Thanks--I had no idea that the holes-case was so rare. That explains why I'm not finding any for sale. Good info.

I know one for sale. Not mine. A bit expensive, and located in Europe... but with box and papers. Drop me a PM if you want a link for it.

Best,

I want to pay under $2500, but I was hoping for lug holes. Don't think that will fit the bill. Thanks for the info though.

I did find another one with lug holes in a search I just did (check out chrono24.com). Both are advertised at 2600 and 2700 Euros (!) (too much if you ask me).

I hope you find one, and you should, especially if you do not mind non-lug holes.

I have a T-serial 14270, and have had it since new. It is a great watch (no lug holes, though). It is my most accurate Rolex so far.

Best and good luck,

A
