New Technique from Rolex AD, to sell you a CPO

Was stopping today at a store of a mayor chain that is a Rolex AD. Casually asked if they had a Sky Dweller for sale (I'm on a waiting list), the SA said yes, we had this Gold one for sale, for which I replied that my interest was for a SS one. He then proceeded to tell me that he had some available that he could get in by tomorrow, if I was interested, including one with a blue dial; WHAT?, sure let's see (as my heart went into sinus tachycardia with excitement)!.
He gets into the computer and sure enough, there was a beautiful SS SD with a blue dial!, it was then, that I saw the price tag $28,500; along with a white symbol on the upper corner that stated CPO.
Yes, fellow enthusiast, now in a sneaky way, they are trying to push the CPO's on us..

They switched the green hang tag to white and charged you double. Scam.

Shocking. A watch store tried to sell you a watch that you told them you wanted and the price and CPO status was clearly visible to you.

The horror.

They are in business to sell watches and it does come with a guarantee from Rolex.

Yup... happening to me at most AD's these days. I mention a watch, the SA gets excited and says "of course, we have that in stock" and walks me over the CPO section. So annoying!

Not the worst technique. Without purchase history I could see how this could play to the ADs advantage of someone who has too much money. I know few folks who bought hulks from CPO program for stupid money.

He could have just said, “No, sorry, get on the list and you might get it at some point in the distant future.” Or, he could also give you the option to purchase it now, just at a higher price. Your choice. I don’t mind being presented with options.

I think the watch was to be at least three years old to qualify for CPO.

This is the only thing preventing new watches being sold at market by ADs.

How would you know if a CPO watch was only a year or two old? They have random serial numbers now 🫣

It just Rolex’s policy. If not for that, why wouldn’t ADs sell all their inventory via CPO?

The CPO program run by Bucherer or any other large chain is the best economic engine for Rolex.

Rolex could learn from this - inventory shared among chain ADs of the parent online.

Thus their retail AD can fulfill a customer's wish in a couple of days.

As we've heard before, the CPO watches are shown in a separate case. So there's no confusion when the CPO item is in the store. But if the buyer is brought over to a computer for the SA to search for a desired model, there is room for confusion (inadvertent or intentional).

But there can be no confusion when the price is quoted...CPO is well over the MSRP of the new watch on Rolex's website.

Rolex knows when the watch was made, all they have to do is look it up in their system.

CPO competes with grey dealers and charges a higher price for greater peace of mind, you pay your money and take your choice. It isn’t a competition with new watches at the AD.

CPO becomes a problem when ADs start using it as a dangling carrot, and the buyer will be pushed to buy in to “build relationships.” After that, forget getting anything new unless you play the new CPO game.

My guess is Rolex will encourage ADs to move brand new hot watches into the CPO cases, or at least turn a blind eye. The play by the rules folks will disagree and say not going to happen, but this solves a number of gray market issues. It also maximizes profit, and minimizes warranty exposure.

When the market cools down, they can go back to the new watch case. It is brilliant, actually.
