Would you have tried it on?

So the other day, I was at my AD.
After discussing for a bit, he gets these 2 beauties out for me to look at. They were obviously already allocated to clients, but they hadn't come to pick them up yet.

The AD was very nice and told me I could look at them for as long as I wanted, and that I could even try them on!!!

I immediately told him I would hate someone to try my watch on, so I wouldn't do it.

What about you? Do you care if someone you don't know gets to try your watch on without you even knowing?

I’m with you. If allocated new for a customer, I would politely decline trying on as well.

I see no problem there, provided they were just allocated and not (sold and) paid for.. why not? The AD saw no harm in it..

As great a photo as that is, you might want to put this in the Patek forum my friend.

The AD was totally wrong offering you the chance to try them on

Patek watches are normally offered to the purchaser in sealed transit boxes

I have bought 5 Patek watches so far ... 3 different ADs. Each one broke the seal for me in front of me.

I would be very unhappy if my watch was in an unsealed condition.

If it's already sold I think it would be inappropriate for the sales person to offer for anyone other than the owner to put on the watch.

If it hasn't been sold - why not? How else is one supposed to know how a piece looks on the wrist?

I'd decline as well. My AD offered for me to try on a white dial steel Daytona the day I bought my first GMT. He said they came in infrequently but I'd feel weird trying on someone else's watch that they already had allocated for them. I wonder how many people tried on my watch between getting the call and coming in to pick it up? No matter I guess.

The point is not about the brand, but about whether or not people here find it appropriate to try on (and potentially start slightly damaging) other people's watches. Especially when we're talking about highly sought after models.

If i didn't know, someone had tried the watch on without me knowing.

Then i wouldn't be bothered, as i wouldn't know they had tried the watch on without me knowing.

Only kidding i know where your coming from and i think i would decline also.

If the watch was in the display case then entirely different, its there to try till its sold.

Both were indeed already sold. It was in fact my first question when they appeared in front of me.

At those values and price points, I would be annoyed if someone tried on the watch before me I picked it up. Great gesture and manners declining sir!

I wouldn't mind if the AD shows it to other discerning watch enthusiasts, especially if the watch is wrapped in plastic. If I was offered the chance to try on a highly sought after piece, I would take the opportunity...but will proceed with lots of care.

They do say beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, but in the real world they are just watches to tell the time, and would not know that anyone had tried them on the wrist.

I'm afraid I don't follow - if these are new pieces why are they not boxed - both are pieces that would of been ordered for clients not for stock.

+1

I’ve always seen it boxed and sealed. And they unseal it in front of me.. of course I’ve only seen it a few times.

I have no clue, they were shown to me both unboxed without stickers.

TBH with you, i would drop them both on purpose right on the floor, making sure it dents them, which would force me to buy them. Wouldn't keep both but it's always added value to have a Nautilus and an Aquanaut.

I wouldn't have tried them on also,

And I would have hated to find out someone had tried mine on if they was allocated to me

I have no issues if someone asks me or I offer to try on the watch I'm wearing at an event etc

Before I bought my 5980 1R. Lots of people tried it on.

That is my dream set right there. Beautiful. I prefer my watches box fresh but I have carefully tried on allocated watches which were still wrapped in plastic just to see the fit. I guess it doesn’t do any harm if they are protected and no straps were creased in the process. My 15202 box was unsealed in front of me.

Why wouldn’t you try them on? The AD asked if you wanted to try them on. The real question is would you have bought them if they were offered to you knowing that someone had tried them on before you?

Of course I would have. But it's irrelevant because the watch wasn't allocated to me.
The case here is person A is told by AD we got your watch come get it. And meanwhile person B who has nothing to do with the trade comes in and tries it on.

If I want that piece, I will avoid coming into contact with it because it will be unbearable. The yearning will only become worse.

I would be delighted to know that another watch enthusiast got to try my timepiece on before I picked it up , even if it was a LE or a 5740. It’s not like they are going to harm it. I often have friends who I let try on my pieces when I first get them sooo what’s the difference? For that reason sure I would try it on. JMO. I understand the question. Maybe find another AD if you don’t like the way that one operates. Or tell your AD when you order a watch you don’t want anyone else trying it on.
