Which box.. and where to buy it?

Gents:

Looking for a period correct box for a 1680 Red Sub, 3.2 mil SN. Also, any idea where to pic one up (and price... if we can post fair prices on the forums? Sorry mods, if not).

Thanks for the help guys!

The seahorse box would be correct for the early 1970's.

I have these inner and outer boxes with my 73-74 1680 Mk6 red, both green (ignore the other watch in my picture)! Maybe also check Sellers websites for past sales to get an idea of the types of boxes that might be period correct for your watch, maybe they could also differ across markets.

When it comes to the boxes, sales date is much more relevant that MFG date on the case. Often the case is manufactured years before the watch was actually sold by an AD and paired up what ever box was standard issue at the time of sale.Your Bufkor sport watch box appeared in the mid 70,s and stayed in use in varying forms until the early 90's. Your box is the earliest Bufkor boxes with the lite green linen interior and the applied crown on the top and applied "Rolex" logos inside.

The next version was a darker green vinyl box with a " large grain" to it a dark green felt interior and gold printed Rolex crown on top and printed Rolex logos inside. The final version was same as it's predecessor except it had a much finer grain to the exterior vinyl.

Thanks for the info, think mine was sold in 75-76 judging by the sales booklet, out of curiosity, why is it called Bufkor?

This box style is referred to as a Bufkor box because Bufkor is the manufacturer and imprinted their name on the underside of the removable display tray.

FYI, Bufkor also made a smaller version of the last box style above used fr the 34mm and 36mm oyster series. The larger box like yours was used with the larger 40mm "sport" models.

These smaller box sets, often confused with the larger version like yours, are confused by uninformed sellers and buyers alike. I have seen a number of " full sets" where the seller bought the wrong size box and added it to his watch set and called it original to the watch....

Thanks for the info, didn't know there was a imprint there. Just checked on the underside of the display tray, you are right, says "Bufkor" and "Made in USA":)

Cruvon, the outer box for your inner Bufkor box is an early 1980's box. (The inner box is late 1970's.) Somebody, somewhere, mismatched those boxes! Your outer box should have a lid that is green with no leather grain pattern. Here is a pic of the correct combination for the late 1970's Bufkor box which were used in the USA. The two other photos - the one with the GMT and accessories depicts the early 1980's Bufkor box and the third photo depicts the mid-1980's Bufkor box.

The progression of the Bufkor boxes goes like this:

late 1970's, light green lid (no leather-grain pattern on the lid), light green inner box

early 1980's, dark green inner box, dark green outer box lid with a course leather-grain pattern on both the outer box lid and inner box

mid- 1980's, dark green inner box, dark green outer box with a fine leather-grain pattern on both the outer box lid and inner box

Thanks, true. My inner box matches with your pics of the late 70's so is the correct one but the outer box as you pointed out is the later one and matches with your second picture. Didn't know about these details, learn something new everyday. Also when were the seahorse ones you posted above till and have seen some inner boxes with the wood interior exposed from late 70's, when are those from?

Seahorse boxes are early 1970's. I've seen a few variations on the inner box. Some cloth, some wood. The progression usually has the cloth boxes preceding the wood boxes - but this is not in "stone."

box

My first President (1971) came in a brown leather covered wooden box with a Rolex wrist strap and 18K gold buckel decoriating the top. Never saw another.

Do you have the measurments for the larger Bufkor box for the sports watches?

Same as the smaller Bufkor except the height is 2.5 inches on the large compared to 2.0 inches on the small. The "small" boxes were really considered ladies model boxes as even the 34mm Air-Kings and OP's came in the large model box.

Is there a definate year of the box changes? I have a 77 5512 and a 81 16660. Would they use the same late 70s' Bufkor light green box?

Late 70's Bufkor, probably used to around 1980.

Early 80's Bufkor, 1980-1983

Mid 80's Bufkor, 1983 - 1988/89

These are guides as there is overlap in the years and nothing is absolute, but these are close.

How about the leather brown box Ref. 70.00.06 with no buckle? What year and watch did this come with?

The guy that sold me my SS OysterQuartz Ref. 17000 gave me the watch with it but I know that wasn't the right box for the OQ.

Thanks.

Anyone know what the codes mean that appear on some of the boxes. I just saw for sale with a code of 11.00.01.
