Is this normal?

This watch is listed in good condition with normal wear on the hands. Are all Panerai's hands expected to corrode like this?

I am not an expert in "vintage" Panerai, but that seems like a lot of corrosion on the hands to me...

I'm guessing it's hard water damage at some point. Is that an 87? What series?

These are older model with tritium hands. Some are still sealed and perfectly fine and some will corrode over time like this one did. Panerai will definitely not service the watch without changing the hands, which will not match the patina on the hour markers.

I am not sure how "normal" the corrosion is.. watch appears to be in good condition for its age though.

I was thinking it got wet at some point. I hope the newer models don't have this same issue.

Corroded hands are not uncommon in vintage watches, but an 87 is nowhere close to being considered vintage. You could find a better example if you have the time and budget.

I am more concerned that if this is normal than my current Panerai watch will end up like this watch.

Seal degradation over time with exposure to moisture will do it. You can take active steps to prevent it by having your watch water pressure tested and avoid moisture if you think there may be an issue. Yours won't necessarily end up like that one anytime soon if that is your concern.

I thought the corrosion on older tritium Pam's was due to the dial/hands
and the tritium gasses emitted in a somewhat sealed enviroment?

Was I lead to believe incorrectly?

The tritium paint alters over this relatively short length of time (<13 years) but that's about it. I would say that you're thinking about Radium which is much, much more "potent" and causes deterioration of the upper dial, etc. - particularly since we're now talking about 50+ years... .

If the hands look like that you'd better have the watch opened to see in what condition is the movement, but to be honest i'd pass, if it was on a 50 year old watch maybe, but it's not the case
