The 1655s have the coolest, funkiest vintage dial out there. And you just don't see that many. Good luck either way.
I agree with Aaron on this one, I'd personally opp for a crisp 1655 over a 1680 Red. Not only is the design of the 1655 very unique, but production numbers of 1655's are considerably lower than 1680's.

Also, Aaron, I found it interesting how you noted that Red Submariners seem to be much more plentiful than Whites. I have for a long time believed the same. It's much more difficult to find a crisp untouched 1680 White than a 1680 Red.

Im new here so please take my suggestion lightly.
Between the two, id go 1655 assuming you already have a sub in your collection and plus the "floating hands" on the 1655 is something i always drooled over.
If you dont have a sub then. Well all of us needs at least one in the collection right?

I'll speak for the (perhaps minority) of Sub fans who simply don't find the 1655 appealing in any way. To me they look like a prop from the 1970s version of Battlestar Galactica.

Lol..right you are!

Thanks men! Keep 'em coming!
I'm sitting on the side of the fence that's bending heavily towards a 1655 right now. I've found a very nice example with a very well known TRF vintage seller.

Get the one you prefer. You said you'll get both in the end anyway, so it doesn't really matter.
Seems like you're leaning on the side of the 1655 already, so...

I prefer RED 1680, but that doesn't matter to you.

That aside - the SUB was, is, and always will be, more popular.

I'd go with the 1655 all day, every day. I love a good Red Sub, but my favourite vintage SS Rolex will always be a 1655, so that makes my choice.

I don't have great eyes, after spending a big chunk of my working life as an editor. However, I don't have trouble reading time on the 1655 at all (unlike the modern Daytonas.) The Explorer IIs have white hands (and a fat orange one) against a black dial, so I pick them up easily.

I'd be picking a great 1655, 1680 Reds are more readily available IMO.

Both great watches for sure.

Can't go wrong either way but I'd go red sub all the way. In my opinion is that while both pieces look great in pictures the red sub has got way more wrist presence in real life :)
