Have to agree Brian but with many today if it's on the net it must be true.

This actually happened and is being reported by numerous sources. However, the watch is an AP, not a Rolex.

It's been picked up by CBS and some other mainstream outlets, so I believe it to be real. Also, I had started another thread relevant to this issue at https://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=931863. I am not really sure it turns on his consideration to, possibly, auction the watch. According to Swiss customs publications, it appears that Swiss law VAT is a real possibility for anything more than the exempt CHF 300 amount, regardless of whether you plan to leave with it and it is more of an accomodation to allow you to do so without paying, unless you fail to declare it. It appears to be a nightmare for those bringing even personal watches to Switzerland or, possibly, EU countries.

Pay the fine and move on... He took a chance and if he didn't know, he should have.

He brought it into the country to donate it at a charity auction. As the saying goes no good deed goes unpunished. And this is the result, Arnold Schwarzenegger will face criminal tax proceedings after failing to declare an item upon arrival to Germany, a Munich Customs press officer told CNN Wednesday. Talk about an overreaction by customs. The upside is they just gave him and the charity hundreds of millions of dollars of free publicity. News networks across the world are reporting it.

So far Schwarzenegger apparently had to pay 10k import tax. The rate is 19% which means customs valued the AP at around 55k. The fine for not declaring the watch at Munich airport will come on top. It will be determined in court at a later date. Tax evasion in an amount of 10k typically results in a fine of 50 to 80 days worth of income. As a result the fine will likely be much much higher than the import tax. Former German footballer Rummenigge was fined 250k or 150 days worth of his income for not declaring two Rolexes valued at 90k at Munich airport on which he had to pay 17k of import tax. The Rolexes had been gifted to him in Qatar but import tax was due regardless. |

It's a non-story, story.
He tried to pay the duty at the airport but the credit card machines were broken and a second ATM didn't have a high enough limit, it took 3 hours to get a proper reader to the location to pay. His charity work goes on around the world and this is nothing new to them, just the non-working machines.

If the watch doesn’t sell, the taxes are returned to him?
Is this the pre crime tax unit?

Appears to not be an exception for watches in transit for a charity. Same thing can happen anywhere if one doesn't follow the rules.... Quote:

In one of the articles listed in this thread it says: The spokesperson added: "If the goods remain in the EU, you have to pay tax and duty on them. That applies to everyone." So if I'm to interpret this properly, if the watch does not go to auction and Arnold brings it back to the US, then there is no tax or duty and thus no criminal proceedings?? Seems to be a bit over the top IMO. |
