Took my Submariner to Rolex Beverly Hills - what a surprise!

Last week I visited Rolex Beverly Hills with my Submariner to replace the worn band. Photos attached.

They estimated the cost at $1000 over the phone.

The facility is beautiful and they gave me a Rolex book for free. It is a really nice hardback. It includes Rolex history, photos of their manufacturing plants in Switzerland and all their models. Excellent book!!

The surprise was that the Submariner I thought was pure and purchased from a good jeweler in Beverly Hills had a number of problems. The jeweler had replaced the crystal and bezel with aftermarket product. Also Rolex found a blemish on the face of the Rolex along with several other wear issues.

When it was all said and done, the bill was $3,000 to service the Rolex and get it back to their standards. What was upsetting is that I was wearing a flawed Rolex and I wasn't going to pay $3,000. Rolex in their quote said the Rolex would be worth $8,000 once fully upgraded.

Anyway I sold the Rolex and now just have the DJ.

This is the third Rolex I purchased with aftermarket components. I sold all three.

Buyer beware of a used Rolex. I have learned the business and my lessons

Which seller here is 'authorized' by Rolex to sell their used watches?

Beverly Hills is such a beautiful facility. Here's hoping I get some memento upon return of my beloved Daytona. Sorry to hear about the switch-outs. I've learned from my time here: The only sure way to grey is through the wonderful cache of trusted sellers here on TRF!

I took it to Bob's Watch. He found the same flaws. He gave me a fair price for the watch. I didn't want to sell it to an unsuspecting individual. It's not worth a couple extra bucks to burn someone.

I think he meant to write "trusted" instead of authorized.

Not sure what "good jeweler" even means.

Do they sell Rolex watches? How many have they sold? What is their reputation for dealing in Rolex watches? Rolex trained watchmaker? Rolex appraisals?

Sorry for the OP but this is NOT buying the seller.

Thanks for sharing your experience and sorry to hear about the bad dealing. Some jewelers can be pretty shady, even in nicer shopping areas and high end brands.

In fact, when I was looking for a used TT DJ for my brother in law, one of the nice salespersons in the local AD gave me a good advice, that it was better to look for and buy from an original owner or just a regular seller who is NOT in the business, than it is to buy from a jewelry shop. Reason being, regular owners are not into swapping parts or repairing watches with aftermarket parts for profit, but jewelers familiar with watch repair can easily do that and then use their shop reputation to pass those watches to unsuspecting buyers.

You should take the watch back to the seller and demand your money back

Took my Submariner to Rolex Beverly Hills - what a surprise!

I think some jewelers are just uneducated about the details. Maybe it was with malice if forethought or maybe it was just cluelessness.

The owner of Bob's Watch agrees with you. He said that for dealers it is nearly impossible to get authentic Rolex parts. He feels that Rolex carries the "purity" issue too far. He noted that if a Rolex is 95% Rolex with an aftermarket part it shouldn't make a difference. But to Rolex it must be 100% pure. Bob's may have a way to get Rolex parts.

What about dealers that have a parts account? Are they safe?

Interesting. I've visited that store and spoke with a couple of guys that work there. I did not get the impression that they would try to pull a fast one one anybody. I'd like to believe that they just didn't know.

And to be fair, some of the "aftermarket" parts are very nearly identical to official Rolex parts. You'd have to scrutinize them with a loupe to find a subtle difference.

Sorry to hear that's such a bummer. I wonder if Bob's will list this with accurate condition or do the necessary repairs?

Curious.

When you sold it, did you disclose the issues to the new buyer?

Edit: Just saw that you sold it to Bobs. Still curious though, did you disclose or did he find the issues on his own?
