Unless there is a large ding in the case. Leave it alone. You may always keep it but I won't always keep you

People get really anal about this. I'm for a light polish. I think people get into problems with a) Constant polishing and b) trying to take heavy dings and scratches out.

Since you are never going to get rid of it, no reason not to polish it if that's what you would like.

It's your watch, do as you please. However, before saying YES, do some research on SOLD watches by Erick, Jacek, Young Michael , etc ... a watch with un-molested original case gets $1K, $2K, sometimes $4-$6K more. And the DOM is usually much shorter too. |

Don't polish it.... it will end up looking odd anyway, not just bc of the rolley poley shaped case you can end up with but with a faded bezel and some lume patina (assuming on this point, you should post a pic or two)juxtaposed with a shinny case, its not consistent... also, you're going to take a hit on value as oldLeatherNeck observed.

A light polish every few years will not hurt the watch at all.
Premiums are paid for nice, vintage, unpolished watches in very good to superior condition. Those that have battle scars from years of hard wear, while being coveted by some for their originality, don't normally bring premiums in my opinion.

Polish or not
Thanks everyone for your input. I will not polish the watch.
Someone asked for pics. It should be back before X-mas and I will send pics then. Doing some research, I am bummed that ten years ago when I sent it in for service to Rolex they replaced the hands and bezel. The watch is now apart and they did not say that the hands or bezel are not the original to the model. I hope that this is true? My father in 1980 won the Reno air races and Rolex gave him the GMT and another (Sportsman???) I think the next year. He told me to take my Pick and I chose the GMT. It is my most prized possession. Thanks again! John |

Thanks everyone. When I get it back from service, I will send pics. I responded to you all in the wrong section.....new guy here. Ten years ago, I sent it to Rolex for service. They replaced the hands and bezel then. I hope that those hands and bezel are true to the GMT model.

Nice history associated with your watch. It's a keeper for sure.

I would keep the watch as it's. As other members pointed out, the watch will lose its value after being polished.
And yes, please post pictures when you have it back from the service. |
