First Rolex decision, long admirer
Hello everyone. My current watch is the 39 mm IWC 3706 Flieger Chronograph, on bracelet. It was a graduation gift from my parents. I love it and will never part with it. I also own a gator strap with OEM tang buckle to dress it up a bit.
Anyway, I work in the legal profession and I am considering my first Rolex. I have narrowed it down, as many before me have, to either the current 2016 214270 Explorer or the current 114060 Submariner ("no date'). My wrist measures just under 7 inches and both look great on me. Actually, I have been unable to try on the new 2016 Explorer, just the previous model, but I think the lume on the 3,6,9 will give it an ever so slightly more sporty presence. My choice in originally going with the IWC over the Rolex was to be discreet, and to wear something less common. I'd still like to adhere to that philosophy. Anyway, I have spoken with two ADs and I can get the Sub at a slightly better discount than the Exp (% wise), making it the better buy. Both are new. Both ADs would have to order the Explorer (they only have the 2015 model) and one of the two would have to order a no date sub. I'd be wearing it with a suit M-F, and with casual attire on the weekends. Both would mean another black faced watch, but these are the only two that speak to me, not having a date or the cyclops. Oh, additionally, and at some point, I will inherit a late 1990s two-tone blue Sub from my father, as well as a 1970s two-tone datejust, black dial. Thoughts and/or recommendations? |

If you can live without the date, go for the 214270 explorer, new model with more balanced hands better than the 3-6-9 lume. A worthy upgrade.
Refined elegance very suited for your professional profile.

I also thought that if going the dive watch route, I would be inclined to get the Tudor Pelagos, as it is a complete tool watch and I liked it after trying it on. I would do that after getting my first Rolex, though. I'll have to go back to the AD again soon. I appreciate the opinions.

114060 is a diverse watch and goes with everything (a suit, jeans you name it).

Both are excellent choices. I am a Sub guy so I will almost always chose the Sub, especially the 114060.

Sub. Once you have that glide lock you'll wonder how you were able to survive before it!

There's no right answer that anyone else is going to give you. Try both on and see which one speaks to you the most. Buy that one.

But the consensus is, no love for the Explorer. lol And I was actually leaning towards the Explorer. I have yet to see one in the wild, and I have found no ADs that even have the new one in stock. They will get it for me, after deposit is posted. I just think the new lume numbers make it even more versatile to skirt that dressy and casual when needed look.

I would go Explorer here. It goes better with a suit which you wear five days a week and easily goes with weekend attire as well. Add to that the fact that you will eventually inherit your Dads Sub and I think the choice is clear.

Sounds like the EXP is going to fit into your overall watch plans better.

I agree with this advice. Plus, if I got a No Date Sub it would be the classic...14060/m.

Tough choice... what do you want it for? I'm a diver, so I'd go with the Sub first. But I would also love an Explorer...

X2. As much as we love one model over another, you will be wearing it. Get what feels right to YOU. Both are excellent choices. I have a sub and have a BIG itch to add another (Hulk) or EXP I/OP39

There is a lot of love here for the 114060, and your choice for the 214270 is also a good one. Ultimately whatever we say here will not matter as you will be the one wearing it five days a week. Go try them out again and see which is more comfortable. Buying a Rolex is always a good choice, irregardless of the model you choose. Good luck.

The Submariner is my favorite watch, but in this case the Explorer might be a better fit. You're less likely to see someone else with one (discrete), it's dressy that can be casual vs. casual that can be dressy (suit 5 days a week), and you're already set to inherit a sub.
With all of that being said, buy the Submariner next after the Explorer |

Agree, plus the lugs on the 114060 are over inflated, if u want a sub I would look at the 14060

Like many others have said before me, I don't think you can go wrong with either. Of the two, I would prefer they Sub.
That being said, when I was in your shoes, I tried on the Sub, Sub Date, and Sea-Dweller. I walked away with the SD! It was absolutely the right watch for me. I'm not saying it's the right watch for you, I'm just saying try it on next time you're at the AD. Best of luck and congrats in advance on your first Rolex. |
