How many are ideal (for you)?
Getting to the point where I think I've accumulated too many watches to enjoy them all.
Not sure what to thin out, though I'm just not a fan of having stuff sit around. Usual rule is "if it sits, out it goes" but then I've worn things that have been sitting on the winder a while and get the "nope, not ready to let this go just yet" feeling. Asking for opinions here to see where people land on this: do you have an ideal number? Or just get as many that you like and can afford? What is the rationale behind the #, if you have one? |

oh man, you're gonna really make me examine myself here aren't you! lol.
I would say 3-4, but that's not how many I have. Don't make me think about these things. |

Before I had to liquidate my collection when I got divorced I had three watches and I believe that still holds true today for me. Just got back in the game picking up the BLNR with my sights on the Yachtmaster II next. Not quite sure what #3 may be but I've been toying with the idea of the Breitling Navitimer. In any case, 3 is the goal for me, but that may change in the near future....lol.

Its an individual thing, I own 5 Swiss high end watches and only regularly wear 2. Like clothing, you wear what fits and what you really like. Even though I have three I don't wear much, I can't part with them. If your watches have collector value, by all means, hold onto them. I like a good waterproof watch for scuba diving, swimming and as a tool watch, Breitling Galactic. I have a new Rolex hulk that I wear daily but baby because it's new. Relatively low resale value on non Rolex watches is also a factor.

2-3. Currently I have 7 with three being Rolex/Tudor. I could box up the sentimental ones and keep the GMT and BlackBay and be fine.

I have to say 6 plus as I still would like to buy both a Tudor Submariner 79090 (Blue) and a Rolex GMT Master II 16710 (Coke).

I've bought, flipped, sold, And put some away.....always enjoyed the pursuit, the sale, the negotiations, etc. But, always had an end goal of total satisfaction. I've had up to 8, and as few as 2 to rotate. I've decided that 4/5 will be a good, manageable, daily rotation. Also decided.... past my core daily rotation, I MAY keep a couple on hand to satisfy flipping, selling, hunting urges. But have definitely decided a core 4/5 to KEEP, enjoy, wear often, and be satisfied.

To paraphrase a rule of cycling, the correct number is n+1, where n is the number you currently own. Or alternatively if you are married it's s-1, where s is the number of watches that would cause your spouse to leave you.

I used to think two was the perfect number but now think it's three. That way I can keep my options open!

That goes for me, too. Currently, I've got about 15 and my wife said she would kill me if I brought home another one.

I prefer 2 max. 3, more watches gives me a lot of stress (why....?, I do not know)

What's weird is I was a one watch guy for decades and now I have twenty and can't fathom going back to one. But at the same time, I know twenty is too many. So seven? One for each day of the week?

Been as high as 15 - I'd like to settle at 9 with your day of the week rationale plus switch for weekends. It should probably be 5-7. Total non answer I guess

I clicked two but for me ideal would be one. Well, I'd also need a Polar like sports watch with heart rate monitor. A DJ 36mm, SS, Jubilee hidden clasp bracelet. Period. End of story. I might just reach that end some day. I could simply hand over case after case of watches to my daughter and have it done with. Maybe some day.

I voted 4. Trying to stay between 3-5 these days. Currently at 5 with one going out. Went up to 12 and that was way too many. Just the insurance on all those watches cost me a watch every couple of years.
