Tritium Versus........

What do you prefer, as an "illumination" option for your watch?

I have always liked Tritium (admittedly for night sights on my weapons), and kind of miss the constant, bright luminosity on, for example, my 18K/SS GMT IIc, versus a Tritium/Luminox type approach.

While I realize there is a half life issue with Tritium (12.3 years, approximately), it would be nice if Rolex would offer a Tritium/Luminox Type option, and simply provide for a replacement during a service, as needed. I'm sure that will never happen, and was just curious what others felt/thought.

My early 90's TAG tritium is quite spent. Hardly shows at all after the first few seconds( after holding it close to a bright light source). I'm hoping my subc lume stays brighter much longer(from what I know a out it it should)

Patina! Patina! So in my case I like Tritium, even though my watch has no Patina.

I like luminova because it really shows up best at night. I have to admit my 5512 from 1967 still glows enough to read the time and my 14060 glows a little better but my 16612 with luminova puts them both to shame. I like to be able to see my watch at night.

How am I the only person who voted, "I have really good night vision!"?

The tubes on my Ball Fireman II are excellent.

IMO all watch manufacturers should use them.

I bought my first DateJust in 1986, of course with a Tritium dial......I thought it was the most amazing thing I had ever seen......I would specify Tritium in a heartbeat over a luminous substance that has to be "charged up" under a light source......Tritium glows no matter how much or how little light it is exposed to....that's what makes it so brilliant, the luminosity you see when you first enter the darkness is exactly the same no matter how long you stay in the dark....once your eyes have grown accustomed to the dark the glow from it is just fantastic......just such a shame it has a half life......

New here, thought I'd chime in.

I love tritium or Luminox. I've got a Traser watch with the latter and it's wonderful. But the half-life issue is a problem, especially for an heirloom-quality piece.

I just picked up an Omega Seamaster with Super Luminova and it's fabulous. It is readable all night long and no half-life issues. So, with this experience, my vote goes for (Super) Luminova.
