Tiffany, Hermes, Rolex: Teachers are getting ‘ridiculous’ gifts one-percent parents

I taught briefly in NYC. I only got 5 trips to the ER because of assaults by my Junior HS students.

Tenafly ,NJ - A couple lambos in the student lot, every trim of M3 available and nothing but Ford Taurus and Priuses in the teacher's lot.

It's not new at private schools and teachers don't make much money. Bigger things to scoff at.

It's the post. This is not common. My kids go to one of those schools and these things are actively discouraged. Homemade gifts are the norm.

In my 1%er township's 10 out of 10 school the suggested donation is $25.
$25 x 20 = $500 assuming everyone contributes. There are 0.1+%ers here who may give lavish gifts, but we certainly don't and I haven't heard of it. I'd give $50 if they asked, but not $100. I think that's excessive and still well below the most affordable Rolex BTW.
One interesting thing about the schools here where I live is that even though the local district is top 5 in the state and has been in the top 10 since they started ranking schools, 1/3 of the eligible students attend very expensive private schools instead.

My wife has spend her entire career teaching in suburban NJ. She has never, ever gotten a ostentatious gift. Cookies, Christmas cards, things like that, yes. I think one year a favorite student of hers gave her a Starbucks gift card.

A Rolex?

No.

I've taught in independent schools for over 25 years (and I still do). There is a modest culture of gift-giving at my current school, but it's usually either food, gift cards, or (at the higher end) something like a tie. That said, I drive a Mercedes (C Class), and wear a Rolex - both of which I bought after saving for them myself. I'd never want to owe something like that to the extravagant largesse of a parent.

Tiffany, Hermes, Rolex: Teachers are getting ‘ridiculous’ gifts one-percent parents

I would have no problem tipping a teacher my child likes. Teachers make very little money and I think showing appreciation is completely fine however, I would not do it just because other people do it.

Tipping in NYC has gotten completely out of hand. Between the building staff of a super, doormen, porters, and maintenance and then a house keeper and dog walker- that's $1000 in tips as it is. I stopped the holiday tips for the staff at the garage where I park and my wife's hairdresser because I think it's stupid to have to tip on top of all the tips they receive throughout the year.

In my building in Miami beach, on the other hand, the staff are overjoyed to split $200 between the 20 of them

Didn't that headmaster get a new car that eventually landed Al Pacino an Oscar? So not always a bad thing...
