If you are looking to go grey market for your one and done Nautilus, which reference

Hey guys,

I don't think I'll play the Patek game. I think one Patek in the collection is enough for me, and I think it will be a nautilus.
So I'll have to go secondary market.
In this case, which reference would you recommend?

I just learned about the 5800 this week and really like it, but before I go down the rabbit hole on that reference and really pursue it, any other references I should look for?

To clarify, I'm looking for a time only Nautilus.

Thanks

5811/1G. I think the new clasp, the wrist presence and weight is much better than the 5711. Also the 2 part case construction goes back to the original 3700. The blue dial is also darker and gives off a more sophisticated look.

This 7118/1450G and R are the only time-only Nautilus. You are welcome.

In my eyes, replacing 5711/1A with 5811/1G is a huge money grab by Patek. At the AD I'd pay nearly 3x what 5711/1A cost only a few years ago for a watch I like less. Of course this is irrelevant when buying preowned but for a daily watch I prefer steel over WG and have no need for lots of weight and wrist presence. Also 40mm was plenty large. I am torn on the return to the 2 part case construction as there is no functional benefit unlike in the 1970s. Strictly speaking it isn't 2 part anyway with the display. In my eyes, the only real benefit of 5811/1G is the new clasp.

The 5800 is a beauty and rare but it is also small. A former boss of mine had a 3800 (same size as 5800 except for the ears) but he was a midget. As a result of the wide bezel and small blue dial the 3800 felt even smaller than my little 34mm 3998P Calatrava.

Long story short, unless your wrists are 6.5 inch or smaller I'd look at the 40mm variants. For everyday wear I'd go steel 5711 or 3700 depending on if you want a 40y old OG or a recent watch and on seconds hand or not. If WG I'd look at the rare 3711/1G rather than 5811 if budget is no object.

I fully agree that the 5811/1G is a money grab by Patek and slightly hypocritical of TS to state on record that he doesn't want the 5711 to be the face of PP then goes on to release the 5811 that looks 99% like the 5711 but just 1mm bigger (hardly noticeable) and 2x the MSRP.

BUT, on the wrist the 5811 feels glorious! The 5711 feels lightweight compared to the 5811 and like you said the clasp is a game changer for the Nautilus line-up. I don't think it will be as sought after as the steel Nautilus (5712, 5726, 5990) but personally for me, its wearability is an experience on its own, only surpassed by the 5740. The 5990/1R has a great colour palette (rose gold case with blue dial is always a winning combination) but the case is slightly on the thicker side.

I much rather prefer this version of the money grab over simply charging 2x more for steel and non updated clasp. Lol.

5740g for sure! I prefer watches with complications.

Especially now the grey price have fallen so much that it is not at a crazy markup.

Another +1 here, especially if goal is one and done. Hard to see what else you would need to 'upgrade' to from here.

Given OP is looking for a time only Nautilus I'd be surprised if 5740 was in the mix. Great watch, but a PC isn't exactly time only in my book.

Haha okay time only and date.

BUT you guys make a good point about the 5740. It is my fave Nautilus if I went for a complication.
Can someone tell me what retail vs grey is for 5740 these days?

It wears that small eh? I do have a 6.5inch wrist, but if it looks small I don't want it.
So I guess 5711 vs 3700 then?

Isn't day, date and month part of the timeline?

5740 or 5980/1R or 5712/1R, would be hard to pick just one

5740G for sure. Tick off the list of a grand complication and a nautilus which has that beautiful sunburst blue dial which I think is much better

5740G is the best one and done Nautilus.
If going steel then the 5711
If going Rose 5712R
I can promise you this won’t be your last Nautilus

My ultimate one and done Nautilus would probably be either 5740g or 5811g, but then they are white gold and if to be worn daily I really much prefer a stainless steel, so either 5726, 5711, or 5712.

The best combo will be a 5711/1A for daily and 5740/1G for special occasion. The full gold Nautilius is indeed quite heavy for daily use.

Not sure about having more than 2 Nautilius personally as I prefer the thin Nautilius. Other than 5711/5811/5712/5704, the rest of the line up is too thick for me to be an Nautilius. (But it is just my personal taste)

One and done for me would be the 5712/1a
If it’s time only, white 5711
Money is no object, 5740

I think this is the easiest to answer question that anyone has asked, on this site, since I've been here: 5711/1a, blue dial. The original, but better.
Be sure to get a full set: wood box, COO. Buy one that is as new as possible unless you're hooked on the duller blue dial of the early models.

Go for the 5712. Beautiful complication. And similar proportions to the 5711. Super thin. Same profiles. It’s the nautilus I love the most, in steel.
