Smoking been a few threads lately

What are your memories of where you could smoke that you cannot today......

My "best" one is I used to play football and the change rooms had a vending machine to buy them.

I gave up 10 years ago, but remember smoking on the train to school (), top of the bus and even the Tube! I’ll never start again but I do miss the occasional post bbq, glass of wine smoke

I remember smoking at school in the “designated smoking area”.

Glad I kicked the habit, although later in life, regret ever starting !

Restaurants were always my favourite it was always manners to wait until everyone had finished their meal ignoring the tables three feet away.

It's not where more so than the look prejudice people give toward those who choose a glorious lifestyle that includes the joys of smoking. Then again 99.99999% of them are just NPCs, so.....

Who remembers the smoking section on airplanes? I remember running out of carryon cigarettes on a flight from London to Cairo, but the second hand smoke was enough to get me through.

Not the reply you were looking for, but I do remember where and when I had my first cigarette and my last …

It was highschool in the “smoking area” and it was just before my French exam. I smoked that baby right down to butt … man was I cool …

Went straight to my exam, a little light headed.

Sat down. My stomach was turning. I didn’t feel good. Started to get the sweats.

Barfed at my desk, and my nose started to bleed (unrelated to the smoke, but nevertheless it happened).

Went to the nurses office where I rested for a while.

As a result, I missed the exam and was awarded my term mark as my final grade.

Smoking saved my French credit, because I would’ve failed that exam. Nevertheless, I never smoked again

As a musician, ok, bass player, I always thought if you were in a bar cigarette smoke is just something you had to deal with. When the laws were changed I was amazed how much nicer it was. In the summer especially the stench of the of the 2nd hand smoke would permeate your clothes & equipment to the point of being nauseating.

Now the only thing that stinks is my bass playing.

Thanks, pal! We are still recording our followup album and having a blast doing so. Our special guest keyboard player offered to have us record his Steinway for one track & it turned out better than even we expected. We have two more tracks to lay down before releasing the album.

Ha! My bass strings are Thomastic Infeld Jazz flat wounds, made in Austria. They are very expensive in comparison to other brands but literally last for a couple decades. Not uncommon for me to go 15 or more years between sets.

What's a bass player use for contraception????

Not only do I remember this. I remember standing in the smoking section to have a smoke when I couldn't get a seat there. I used to love having an after diner scotch and cigar on my trans Atlantic flights.

That 1st album consisted of songs that had over 10 years of stage time to arrange and polish. This recording is being done differently. We are building these new songs in the studio which requires a different mindset but equally thrilling to see them come to life.

I remember as a young child, 5-8 probably, being on planes and everyone smoking. Sometimes it looked like the plane was on fire for all of the smoke. I live in a city where cigarette manufacturing was the backbone of the local economy and my father worked for the company. I remember going with my mother to pick him up after evening shift and it had rained and the warehouses where they stored the tobacco had leaked and the tobacco was wet. The smell is very unique, sweet, almost sickening to the stomach. I remember asking what that smell was and being told, Money. I could care less about smoking as long as those smoking keep it to themselves and are not in shared areas that other people are forced to be in.

I remember my first computer programming job after I graduated from college. I sat in a cubicle while smoking in the office all day. Circa 1985…

Of course, I also remember one of our senior managers walking into a conference and saying, "thanks for the mammaries" after taking one look at the pretty young women sitting around the table. He was channeling Bob Hope back then, who used to say thanks for the memories on his TV shows. Same era…If someone did that today, it would be all over social media, and he'd be fired on the spot.

I smoked from the age of 14 until around 36 and everyday regret ever starting.

I smoked from about age 15 to about age 24. Such a dirty nasty habit. I smoked about 25 cigs a day (a pack) and if I went out to a bar at night I'd probably chain smoke another pack. Basically the only ones I really enjoyed were the ones with the first morning coffee and the one after a meal. The rest were just habit and social interactions with other people who we'd light up with.

We didn't realize how bad we smelled, our clothes and hair reeked of the stuff and our houses and cars did as well.

So glad that it went out of favor mostly because smokers inflict it on everyone around them.

My understanding of one of the reasons it caught on so much during the 1950s was that cigarettes were given free to soldiers during WW2 and they all came home addicted and soon their wives and girlfriends were addicted to. And it was also glamorized by Hollywood movies.

No one really knew till later on how unhealthy it was or how it was being manipulated by tobacco companies to addict people.

I think the health risks of smoking were known before the war. My grandad was told by his doctor to quit in the 1930’s. But, you are right about the GI’s getting hooked. Cigarettes came in the rations. No sleep, not enough to eat, and battlefield stress made it easy to get addicted to nicotine. Glamorizing smoking in the 50’s and 60’s made it aspirational for American youth.

I agree the health dangers had been known but not really medically acknowledged. Look at all the doctor ads advertising what they smoked.

The insidious thing about it was that everyone knew older people that had lung issues, but people could smoke for years before it really showed up and then it was too late.

The young think they're invincible so that doesn't help either.
