My first Rolex for dummies. I need your help!
I have been intersted in starting a Swiss watch collection for a super long time. I currently only own one watch and that's a Tissot T-Race. I bought it from a guy a few months back for $400. A few years ago I purchased a brietling colt from diamonds international in Mexico for $2400. Due to financial issues I had to sell it for less then half of what I paid for it. I am looking to buy a new timepiece again to start my collection. I am looking to spend around 6k for my next piece. Should I buy used or new? What would be a good piece to buy in my price range? I love brietlings look and uniqueness. However I know that Rolex will depreciate less if I buy new. I would like to buy one new piece a year. My knowledge of Swiss timepieces is slowly getting bigger. What I mean is I know little. I joined to this forum for help from enthusiasts to help me make better decisions in the wide variety of choices. I would love to buy a Daytona because it makes me tingly whenever I try one on. Any info, opinion, or general know how from a fellow watch enthusiast would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

If you have an eye on depreciation, I would suggest that you look at pre-owned watches. Rolex do hold their price well, but if you let the first owner take the hit you should have a watch which will drop very little in price...

Danny, welcome to TRF!
Jason has explained the pre-owned value retention well. I agree with that comment. On a first watch within that budget, I'd suggest these (all pre-owned): Explorer, Explorer II, Submariner 14060 or a DateJust. All should leave you with leftover funds to handle any unforeseen financial emergency that might force a quick sale of your "new to you" Rolex. Get started in the For Sale section of the Classifieds here on TRF! And share pics when you buy. Good luck!

Welcome to TRF.
6K wont get you a new or even a used SS Daytona. This doesn't mean that you need to settle for something other than a Daytona however. I would suggest before you buy that you do a bit more research and continue to save for now so you will have a better idea what options you might have prior to making a commitment. If you take a look at the For Sale section here you should be able to get a better idea what different Rolex watches can cost.

Try finding something second hand that has maybe recently been discontinued. This may hold the value for you and as time passes may increase in value.
I would suggest looking for something that you could use in your daily life. I used to travel a bit and a GMT was very handy. But now I'm at home more I find it surprising how handy an elapsed time facility is on a daily basis, plus I swim a lot with my kids and therefore I wear a submariner quite a bit. Alternatively, just something based on style and how you might dress. With 6k, that's still a lot of watch and a lot if choice. Don't hesitate to visit your local dealer and try them on. Most if all, have fun picking a watch. |

There are a several Rolex watches that can be had new from about $5000 to $7000, including the Air-King, Oyster Perpetual, Date, Datejust, and Submariner.

I meant to say the Daytona would cone in the next few years. The lowest I've seen them cost is around 13k and up from there. Is there any upside to buying the sub new?

Absolutely no upside on a new Sub - it depreciates the moment your name goes on the warranty card. A pre-owned sold my a motivated seller will hold value best. I hope you know that only 1 in 10,000 modern Rolexes will appreciate in value - the trick is figuring out which one

Hey Danny,
I too have a Tissot T-Race and a Breitling. Check out the SS GMT-IIc. You can find a gently used one for close to your price range. Good luck. With Rolex there are no wrong decisions. |

Well Danny, in many ways it depends how lucky you are as many of the great deals last less than a few hours here on the forums ^_^
Also when you say new, do you mean the latest series serial number models fresh from the factory and brand new in the box (BNIB) or is a 5 year old watch still in plastics, unworn with no previous owners ok too? In any event, I've seen several new Airkings or Datejusts in your price range. But like everyone else is saying, buy preowned and save money. Use some of the savings to get the watch serviced if its out of factory warranty. Each time it gets a service Rolex gives you a fresh 2 year warranty :) +1 for a gently preowned GMT-IIc. Some great updates in that watch and I've seen them listed as cheaply as 6.3K https://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=209432 https://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=208958 Good luck on your mission!
