Hey all -

I've been hunting around for 1976 (sub, date, datejust) and am striking out big time. Plenty of watches from 77-78 and 72-73 but not 76. Anyone know why? Was it a limited production year?

Very good question!. If you have a look at Rolex's for sale on Chrono24 and narrow the search down to look by year, there's only 18 for sale. But there's 70 from 1977 and 32 from 1975. You've got to go back to 1963 to see a year with so few on the market in fact.

This is no definitive guide of course but it seems a little more than just coincidence....

You know, this isn't the first time I've heard this wrt 1976. Weird Rolex year or we've got the serial number tables wrong maybe?

Based on the serial number tables, many of the numbers for 1976 would fall in the 4.4 mil range, but those numbers are/were used for replacement cases. Maybe that has something to do with it. Just a guess.

I'd speculate perhaps there is some correlation to economic cycles...

I myself have been looking for watches from 1974 and 1991 and find that late 80s and early 70s watches seem to be much more abundant than these specific years. IIRC, the energy crisis started in '74 and a recession ensued and '91 was another rough patch.

1976 is the year with the lowest production of cases in the 70s.
the total amount is in the same range of the 1967 production ( less than 230.000 ).

There was a global recession in the mid-70s, perhaps related to the low Rolex production numbers at this time.
